Song Of The Day

New Multitudes – “Hoping Machine”

New Multitudes is an album put out by Jay Farrar, Will Johnson, Anders Parker, and Yim Yames. These guys had been friends for a while and it was inevitable that they’d collaborate at some point. And here it is, an album of songs written and recorded using archived Woody Guthrie lyrics. The scope of what Guthrie wrote in his lifetime is becoming clear to me, and I’m so delighted we can experience these words after his death through other artists. This is the 4th or 5th Woody Guthrie project I’ve heard about in the past few years! This particular song from New Multitudes is really haunting and beautiful –

Lyric Of The Week

Jackson Browne – “You Know The Night”

This tune is off of the Note Of Hope album, which is a celebration of Woody Guthrie. I had listened to the song so many times before I actually heard this lyric, but when I did, I certainly was struck by it. No surprise, these are Woody Guthrie’s lyrics…he’s got such an amazing way with words.

“I just felt like you feel
when you feel like
the angels are curling your hair
and you feel like
the devil is scratching your heel”
