Best Of ’10: Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend – Contra

Sometimes January releases can slip through the cracks when the year comes to an end and people compile their “Best Of” lists. This album is NOT one that I’ll soon forget about. In fact, Contra (Vampire Weekend’s sophomore release) is sure to be in my top 5… this Brooklyn-based band continues to delight me with their fun, catchy, smile-inducing tunes while also adding depth to their sound and to their lyrics with songs like “Taxi Cab”, “Run” and “I Think You’re a Contra”. This band is so easy for so many people to hate, but I’m totally won over thus far.

Favorite tracks: “Horchata”, “White Sky”, “Giving Up the Gun”

Song Of The Day

Vampire Weekend – “Holiday”

The video for this song is… interesting… but at the least, it’s another great tune from VW’s second album, Contra. I’ll definitely be featuring some music from this band for my “Summer Songs” Hot Seat on Monday at 9pm (Listen at mvyradio.com).

Song Of The Day

Vampire Weekend – “Horchata”

I may sound like a broken record about these guys, but on a gorgeous sunny day cruising around the island with the windows down, their music is perfection. Especially loving the opening track of their new album Contra… it’s called “Horchata”:

Vampire Weekend – “Giving Up The Gun”

I can’t tell you how much I’ve been enjoying Vampire Weekend’s new album Contra. It’s basically been on repeat in my car and on my iPod. They’ve just put out a fun, star-studded video for the song “Giving Up The Gun”. Check it out:

NEW Music: Vampire Weekend

I was psyched to check out the highly anticipated sophomore release from NYC-based Vampire Weekend. This band has created such a buzz…so many people love them and so many others love to hate them. Well, I love FEEL GOOD music and Vampire Weekend never lets me down. Literally within the first 10 seconds of the first track,”Horchata”, they had me smiling. This might be my favorite track on Contra with vibes and drums making for a fun, catchy beat. Track #2, “White Sky” is probably my other favorite. It’s got electronic video game-like sounds and a delightfully playful chorus.

The album goes in several different directions, with the more guitar-driven “Holiday”, the extremely frantic “Cousins”, and the piano-centric “Taxi Cab” and echoic “California English” – both complete with strings. The album winds down with the reggae-ish “Diplomat’s Son” and the dreamy title track, “I Think Ur A Contra”.

Vampire Weekend’s debut album was my absolute favorite of 2008, and I’m thrilled to start off 2010 with this solid release!
