For Valentine’s Day, here’s my kind of love song. It’s so…HAPPY. Of course that vibe is mostly coming from the music, which is impossible not to dance to. But the lyrics are pretty great too – he sings about dreaming of being with someone and not knowing how to make that dream a reality. It’s almost as if the song IS the dream. It’s dripping with this contagiously happy vibe.
I cannot help but smile when I hear this song. And I can’t help but wonder…is it the initial dream, the HOPE of love that’s truly the best part? After all, we do create that within ourselves. It’s the butterflies in the stomach. The heart beating rapidly. The giddiness that you just can’t hide. It’s perfect. And for me, it feels a lot like this song sounds…
“The Moon Song”
With the help of director Spike Jonze, Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) wrote and recorded this song for the movie “Her” – a beautifully shot film set in the future starring Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore Twombly. Phoenix nails heartache, loneliness and vulnerability in this thought-provoking love story. The film is up for “Best Picture” at the Academy Awards and the track is up for “Best Original Song”.
This particular version of “The Moon Song” is recorded as a duet with Ezra Koenig (Vampire Weekend), and I think it’s stunning. If it’s a little too sugary for you, don’t worry, it’ll likely be my only schmaltzy pick for this week’s “love songs” theme…

Liz Longley – “I Will” [Cover]
Valentine’s Day has come and gone but I just discovered this cover that Liz Longley posted on her YouTube channel just before the holiday to spread some love. Gorgeous tune from The Beatles, and a gorgeous rendition done by this Berklee grad:
