My Top 10 Singles: 2013

We’re a week into 2014 but I’m still “stuck” on a few songs that came out last year. These tunes NEVER seem to get old for me. I could listen to them on a loop and just turn it up louder and louder each time around. As I put this list together, it strikes me that I’ve never felt so strongly about a year-end list of songs. It may sound weird, but I think 2013 was a really solid year for SINGLES.

I also noticed a real common thread here – all are very epic sounding, strong tracks with lots of energy and soul.

Here are my favorite singles of 2013:

Tedeschi Trucks Band “Made Up Mind”

Paul McCartney “New”

The Head and The Heart “Shake”

Vampire Weekend “Unbelievers”

Deer Tick “The Dream’s In The Ditch”

The Wheeler Brothers “My Time”

Sons Of Fathers “Roots & Vine”

Eric Clapton “Gotta Get Over”

Amos Lee “The Man Who Wants You”

Serena Ryder “Stompa”

10. The Head And The Heart – Let’s Be Still

These were my favorites of a really solid year of music! It was tough to pick this top 10.

Vampire Weekend in the #1 spot is likely no surprise to you if you know me or read this blog. To me, there was no competition there. If you haven’t heard Modern Vampires of the City, try sitting down for a listen sometime, with an open mind. It saddens me that hype or reputation can sometimes turn people off of a band altogether, without a single note of the music being heard.

A big huge THANK YOU to everyone who reads this blog, leaves comments, likes posts, etc.

I really appreciate you! I hope I helped you discover something new in 2013…here’s to another year of great music!

Happy New Year!
Jess

Let’s Be Still

Here’s another album that I’m considering for my best of list. But like Tedeschi Trucks Band, it may be the power of the single that’s really sticking with me. From start to finish Let’s Be Still is a solid album, but the song “Shake” is extraordinary. Definitely one of my favorite SONGS of the year:

The Head and the Heart – “Down in the Valley”

I’m really digging this tune from The Head and the Heart. I heard it today in a restaurant…some Sirius channel was on. If you’d like to hear a great live performance from this Seattle-based band, check out the mvyradio archives…we’ve got their set from Newport Folk 2011.

The Head and the Heart – “Lost My Mind”

The Newport Folk lineup has been announced and it looks incredible. There are acts on there that I’ve heard of, but never checked out. So I figured I’d explore some of those acts and of course take you along with me…

The Head and the Heart is a band out of Seattle and they’ve made quite a splash with their debut self-titled album, garnering attention at SXSW, recognition from NPR, a record deal with Sub Pop, and now a slot at Newport Folk. This six-piece group that’s often compared to CSNY and the Beatles is sure to please at Newport. Beyond LOVING their band name, I also love the sound of this tune, “Lost My Mind”:
