#GRAMMYs 2013

I had the duty of watching the Grammys last night and providing some commentary on mvyradio’s Facebook and twitter pages. I’m extremely lucky to be working for an independent radio station where I choose and truly love the music we play — and that was very obvious to me last night. I posted and commented on all the “mvy” artists…which were really all the artists that I was interested in seeing…and left everything else out. The Black Keys doing “Lonely Boy” with The Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Dr. John blew me away. Jack White ROCKED – he surprised and impressed me. I thoroughly enjoyed Mumford & Sons, The Lumineers, and FUN…

and what I was most excited about (and what didn’t disappoint), was this tribute to Levon Helm done by Brittany Howard (Alabama Shakes), Mumford & Sons, Elton John, Mavis Staples, Zac Brown, and T-Bone Burnett:

SONG: Dr. John

“Big Shot”

Dr. John, with producer Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys), have really nailed a vibe and sound on their new album Locked Down. It’s gritty and swanky…smooth and cutting all at once. There’s a vintage sound, but it’s so new and fresh at the same time. Gabe Soria may say it best in the liner notes:

“…this is Locked Down. It’s an invitation to do a dirty grind in a backroom bar at 3am and a call to go to church the next day; it’s a fierce burst of salvation and an apocalyptic warning; it’s a seductive com-on and an initiation; it’s candle-burning jams rubbing shoulders with ecstatic odes to the great mystery.”

Here’s one of my favorite tracks, “Big Shot”:

Graffiti6 – “Stare Into The Sun”

This London-based duo has been around for a few years and this isn’t necessarily a new track from them, but it’s new to me, and I love it! I think this music would go over well with fans of The White Stripes or The Black Keys…and I guess I’m in that musical mood lately, considering my last few blog posts…

Grace Potter & the Nocturnals – “Never Go Back”

I should be honest and start by saying I’m not even close to a Grace Potter fan. I won’t say she and her band aren’t talented (because they are), but it’s just not my cup of tea. Having said that, here’s a new single from the band, co-written by…wait for it…Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys (yes, he’s apparently been busy). And…I love it! It’s like whatever Auerbach touches turns to gold. No, but seriously, this track has a pulse, it’s got a life to it…makes me wanna dance. Check it out:

For all of you who ARE Grace Potter fans, the new album, The Lion the Beast the Beat, will be out June 12th.

Dr. John – “Revolution”

I’m blown away by how freakin’ cool this sounds. Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys produced Dr. John’s new record…and that influence can be heard all over this track. Locked Down officially comes out on April 3rd. And this single sure does get me excited to hear the rest:

Favorite Songs Of 2011

Here are my 5 favorite songs that are NOT on my Top 25 album list (which will be posted tomorrow). It’s quite the eclectic mix, but I’ve absolutely loved them this year. And in most cases, I’m not a huge fan of the album in its entirety. I will say, The Black Keys album would probably be towards the top of my album list, but I haven’t heard the whole thing! Since it came out so recently, I’ve only heard a few songs…it’ll qualify for next year’s list.

The Black Keys – “Lonely Boy”

Beyonce – “Countdown”

Katie Herzig – “Free My Mind”

Bell X1 – “Velcro”

The Belle Brigade – “Losers”

The Black Keys – “Lonely Boy”

It’s always exciting when The Black Keys put something new out there and this is no exception. Not sure if this will be the official video for the song “Lonely Boy” but it’s hilarious and it certainly brightened up my Wednesday. The song is, of course, dynamite. Cannot wait to get the full length album, El Camino. It officially comes out December 6th. I sense this could be one of those late in the year, sneak attack albums that will become one of my favorite of 2011.

The Black Keys – “Howlin’ For You”

My winter blues are in full effect and I’ve been feeling quite lethargic lately. I didn’t feel up for blogging this weekend, sorry for that. I DID watch the Grammy Awards…in fact, I provided live commentary throughout the show on mvyradio’s twitter page, which was really fun. Some of the highlights for me were performances by Mumford & Sons and The Avett Brothers with Bob Dylan and Cee Lo’s hilarious rendition of “F*$# You” with help from Gwenyth Paltrow and some muppets!

I was also psyched to see Ray LaMontagne, Bela Fleck, Patty Griffin, Mavis Staples, and especially The Black Keys win for their respective albums. Brothers was one of my favorite albums of 2010, and the song “Howlin’ For You” is my favorite track on that album. The Black Keys recently put out a hilarious video for the song… you’ll have to click through to watch it on YouTube:

Best Of ’10: The Black Keys

The Black Keys – Brothers

This album is a sure bet for my Top 25 list. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney are The Black Keys and these two guys really know how to put a song together. From the first track of Brothers, they had me on the edge of my seat to hear what was coming next. Their songs (and this album as a whole) sonically reach unexpected places that just sound SO GOOD. It’s a sound that’s tough to describe and almost impossible to compare to much else… a sound that got them 4 Grammy nominations!

Favorite tracks: “Everlasting Light”, “Tighten Up”, “Howlin’ For You”

NEW Music: The Black Keys

The Black Keys – Brothers

Dan Auerback and Patrick Carney produce music that is so freakin’ original! The beats, the lyrics, the mood, the energy…  are all incredibly focused and very ‘Black Keys’. This new album,  Brothers, has totally won me over. It’s actually getting worn out in my car’s CD player.

“Everlasting Light”, “Next Girl”, “Tighten Up”, “Howlin’ For You”, and “She’s Long Gone” start off the album SO strongly that I usually go back to the beginning everytime I get to track six. BUT… it’s definitely worth it to listen all the way through. From the groovy interlude, “Black Mud”, to the trippy sounds of the final track, “These Days”, each song brings you deeper into the hip, cool, unique world of The Black Keys.
