My Top 10 Singles: 2013

We’re a week into 2014 but I’m still “stuck” on a few songs that came out last year. These tunes NEVER seem to get old for me. I could listen to them on a loop and just turn it up louder and louder each time around. As I put this list together, it strikes me that I’ve never felt so strongly about a year-end list of songs. It may sound weird, but I think 2013 was a really solid year for SINGLES.

I also noticed a real common thread here – all are very epic sounding, strong tracks with lots of energy and soul.

Here are my favorite singles of 2013:

Tedeschi Trucks Band “Made Up Mind”

Paul McCartney “New”

The Head and The Heart “Shake”

Vampire Weekend “Unbelievers”

Deer Tick “The Dream’s In The Ditch”

The Wheeler Brothers “My Time”

Sons Of Fathers “Roots & Vine”

Eric Clapton “Gotta Get Over”

Amos Lee “The Man Who Wants You”

Serena Ryder “Stompa”

Best Of 2013: Tedeschi Trucks Band

Made Up Mind

This album is dynamite, of course. No surprise there. I’ve been listening to it a lot the past few days, because I’ve decided I want to pick my TEN favorite albums, and I’m not sure how I feel about the entire album from top to bottom. It’s a serious contender for the list… and no doubt about it, the single “Made Up Mind” is one of my favorite tracks of the year!

LYRICS: Tedeschi Trucks Band

“Made Up Mind”

There’s something so incredibly bad ass about this song. First, I have to say – Susan Tedeschi doesn’t have to wear sexy clothes, gyrate on stage, or be flashy to absolutely KILL IT. I admire this very much about her. When she sings these words, they come across so powerfully. The words themselves are so perfectly subtle – they leave a lot for your imagination to fill in. I can’t stop listening at full volume! It’s such a great anthem.

“I know you wish that you could see in my window
Wishing you could pull up the blind
And I’m wearing my robe made of flowers
Just me and my made up mind

I know you’d like to walk in my garden
And pull yourself up a big bouquet
You can smell the magnolias
But it’s just like I told you: I’m in a higher place

I’ve got a made up mind
I’ve got a made up mind
If you’re thinking I might break down in time
You’re gonna find
I’ve got a made up mind”

SONG: Tedeschi Trucks Band

“Midnight In Harlem”

This seems to be the most played and most requested song on mvyradio these days, and it’s not hard to hear why. I think the guitarwork from Derek Trucks in this tune is especially gorgeous. I would call this song a duet! It’s like his instrument is his voice, speaking to us and conversing with Susan Tedeschi at the same time…and then as the song ends, his solo just SOARS and it’s the last thing we hear. It’s something special…

Best Of ’11: Tedeschi Trucks Band

Tedeschi Trucks Band – Revelator

Take the power of Susan Tedeschi’s voice and the utter genius of Derek Trucks’ guitarwork and obviously any collaboration between them is brilliant. But this 11-piece ensemble that was carefully crafted for over a year is simply dynamite! Every track on this album is so solid…my favorites include “Come See About Me”, “Bound For Glory”, and “Learn How To Love”.

Tedeschi Trucks Band – “Learn How To Love”

Man O man, the album Revelator is amazing. I can’t get enough. We recently started playing this tune on mvy, and it just sounds SO GOOD in the mix. Don’t miss this band live if you ever get the chance…it’s just sizzling. Check it out:
