We’re a week into 2014 but I’m still “stuck” on a few songs that came out last year. These tunes NEVER seem to get old for me. I could listen to them on a loop and just turn it up louder and louder each time around. As I put this list together, it strikes me that I’ve never felt so strongly about a year-end list of songs. It may sound weird, but I think 2013 was a really solid year for SINGLES.
I also noticed a real common thread here – all are very epic sounding, strong tracks with lots of energy and soul.
Here are my favorite singles of 2013:
Tedeschi Trucks Band “Made Up Mind”
Paul McCartney “New”
The Head and The Heart “Shake”
Vampire Weekend “Unbelievers”
Deer Tick “The Dream’s In The Ditch”
The Wheeler Brothers “My Time”
Sons Of Fathers “Roots & Vine”
Eric Clapton “Gotta Get Over”
Amos Lee “The Man Who Wants You”
Serena Ryder “Stompa”
1. Vampire Weekend – Modern Vampires of the City
2. Willy Mason – Carry On
3. Lucius – Wildewoman
4. The Lone Bellow – The Lone Bellow
5. Laura Marling Once I Was An Eagle
6. Paul McCartney – New
7. Neko Case – The Worse Things Get…
8. The Civil Wars – The Civil Wars
9. The Milk Carton Kids – The Ash & Clay
10. The Head And The Heart – Let’s Be Still
These were my favorites of a really solid year of music! It was tough to pick this top 10.
Vampire Weekend in the #1 spot is likely no surprise to you if you know me or read this blog. To me, there was no competition there. If you haven’t heard Modern Vampires of the City, try sitting down for a listen sometime, with an open mind. It saddens me that hype or reputation can sometimes turn people off of a band altogether, without a single note of the music being heard.
A big huge THANK YOU to everyone who reads this blog, leaves comments, likes posts, etc.
I really appreciate you! I hope I helped you discover something new in 2013…here’s to another year of great music!
Happy New Year!
I think this album is Paul McCartney’s best in years…I still really appreciate his approach to a pop song, there aren’t many folks out there who do it quite like he does.
Here’s another killer track from Sir Paul’s album New. I’ll say it again – McCartney still has it! This album has some of his best material in years. Check out the star-studded video for this tune:
How does Paul McCartney do it? He’s still putting out incredibly catchy and infectious pop songs at 71 years old. I absolutely love this new single! The full album comes out mid-October.
