Chris Thile & Michael Daves – “My Little Girl In Tennessee”

My brain has been on Newport Folk lately, as I put together mvyradio’s Newport Channel (a commercial-free stream of music from Newport folk artists…coming soon!). I just started listening to some of the tunes from Chris Thile’s collaboration with Michael Daves and it sounds fantastic! I can’t wait to see these guys perform at the festival…

Josh Ritter – “Girl In The War”

Tonight, our mvy LIVE was a set from Josh Ritter at Newport Folk Festival, 2009. Listening back reminded me of how much I adore this amazing singer/songwriter…and how phenomenal he is live in concert. He performs this stunning song during his live set at Newport. **YOU CAN LISTEN TO THAT SET HERE.

Moutain Man – “Soft Skin”

Mountain Man is a trio of women who met during college up in Vermont. Their music is incredibly bare. It’s sometimes simply their 3 voices in gorgeous harmony and other times just an acoustic guitar is featured underneath. I’m very much looking forward to seeing these 3 perform at Newport Folk…I think they’ll fit right in. Here’s a taste of their beautiful sound:

Typhoon – “The Sickness Unto Death”/”The Honest Truth”

This 16-member Portland-based collaborative will hit the stage at Newport Folk this summer, and after checking out some of their music, I’m really looking forward to it! They’ve got an experimental pop sound that’s super engaging and I also really appreciate the thoughtful lyrics and sometimes tender moments in their tunes. Check out this NPR Tiny Desk Concert they did at SXSW this year…

The Cave Singers – “Dancing On Our Graves”

I’m continuing to dissect this year’s Newport Folk lineup, picking out acts that I’ve never heard and exploring them a bit. It’s getting me even more pumped up for the festival! Check out the complete lineup here

As you may know, I’ve been loving Fleet Foxes these days and for a string of dates on their current tour, they’ve got The Cave Singers opening up for them.  This three piece out of Seattle is slated to play at Newport Folk, and after poking around at some of their music online, I think they’ll be welcomed with open arms. The vocals are edgy, the sound is dynamic and they have great energy. You’ll see what I mean with this live performance of the tune, “Dancing On Our Graves”:

The Devil Makes Three – “Old Number 7”

Here’s another act on the Newport Folk lineup that I’m unfamiliar with… the Santa Cruz, California based trio, The Devil Makes Three. Cool name for a band, and a fitting name somehow. Their music almost has a devilish feel to it, combining elements of blues, country, and rockabilly. This tune, “Old Number 7” is a great example of their sound:
