Well, summer sickness has its hold on me…I’ve been fighting it all week. Despite feeling under the weather, I made it to see some of The Wood Brothers’ show at Nectars MV last night, and I’m so glad I did! These guys are great live…they’ve got awesome energy and ridiculous talent on their respective instruments. This song, the single from their new album, is a great example of that amazing musicianship. The bassline! The slide guitar! And how about this trippy video? So fun…
Easy Star All-Stars w/ Citizen Cope – “Karma Police”
Last night I got to check out Citizen Cope at Nectars here on the island. I had never seen him before and I only knew a few of his more popular tunes so I was excited to get a better feel for the music. It was a full band show and I had heard from friends that the full band experience was a much more energetic one compared to his solo show. They were right…the energy was great…lots of hardcore fans were there, singing along to every song and getting pumped up. I enjoyed it a lot. I guess I could compare the music to a more poppy, mainstream Radiohead sound. He’s got those repetitive, out-there vocals that float along and kinda make you feel like zoning out. In a good way. The highlight of the show for me was when he encored with the Radiohead tune “Karma Police”, which he had recorded with the Easy Star All-Stars. Check it out:
Tonight on the Hot Seat, I decided to talk about some upcoming concerts/festivals since the summer season has unofficially been kicked off this holiday weekend. There are a TON of great live acts coming through the area, so I had to narrow it down and focus on just a few things that sound exciting to me. Here is my setlist, and where/when these artists are playing:
I’m getting psyched for the Ryan Montbleau Band to play here on the Vineyard Saturday night. Here’s another homemade video from their YouTube channel. They’re putting out one for each track on the new album, Heavy on the Vine, before it officially comes out on September 21st.
Wow. Just, WOW. I unexpectedly saw Galactic at Nectars last night. I went to the show ready to dance, but I really had no idea just how grooooovvvvyyyy it would be! They had trombone player Corey Henry from the Rebirth Brass Band sitting in, and the dynamic between Henry and Galactic sax player Ben Ellman was unstoppable! The first set was filled with funk, funk and more funk. Just when I needed a change, the second set brought some rock and R&B flavor to the room. What a night! One highlight was when Corey Henry JAMMED out on the slide trombone while jumping offstage and walking through the crowd…jumping up on the bar and just playing his heart out! My ears are buzzin’ and my body is still feeling the funkadelic New Orleans vibe. These guys are currently touring…definitely check them out live if you get the chance!
