I’m going to go ahead and post this since it’s probably the most talked about music video on the web today. Mumford & Sons enlisted the help of comedic actors Jason Bateman, Will Forte, Ed Helms and Jason Sudeikis to parody the band…and I think it’s a breath of fresh air!
I had the duty of watching the Grammys last night and providing some commentary on mvyradio’s Facebook and twitter pages. I’m extremely lucky to be working for an independent radio station where I choose and truly love the music we play — and that was very obvious to me last night. I posted and commented on all the “mvy” artists…which were really all the artists that I was interested in seeing…and left everything else out. The Black Keys doing “Lonely Boy” with The Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Dr. John blew me away. Jack White ROCKED – he surprised and impressed me. I thoroughly enjoyed Mumford & Sons, The Lumineers, and FUN…
and what I was most excited about (and what didn’t disappoint), was this tribute to Levon Helm done by Brittany Howard (Alabama Shakes), Mumford & Sons, Elton John, Mavis Staples, Zac Brown, and T-Bone Burnett:
A friend of mine posted this video today and he wrote — “Remember when they made videos that actually made you think?”
Here Mumford & Sons take their gorgeous song to another level by showing us a compelling character in a beautiful setting and making us feel something.
On the first few listens, I wasn’t completely floored by this new Mumford & Sons single. But then it really started to sink in. Then I started to turn it up REALLY LOUD. This is the kind of tune that grabs my heart and takes it to new heights for 5 minutes.
Mumford & Sons – “Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight”
A Friend Of mvyradio came into the station today to record an hour-long program called The Hot Seat and he chose some great tunes…including Mumford & Sons covering The Beatles! He said his family doubted that anyone could really do a Beatles song better than John, Paul, George, and Ringo, and I think they have a good point. But there’s really something to be said about an artist making someone else’s song their own and bringing a fresh sound or mood to the table. I dig this version of “Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight”:
During the holiday season, I always have moments where I think about those less fortunate…people who don’t have what they need, people who are going through hardships. This Mumford & Sons tune touches on that so beautifully…with a hopeful chorus:
“But you are not alone in this And you are not alone in this As brothers we will stand and we’ll hold your hand Hold your hand”
There’s GREAT energy in this tune from Mumford & Sons. I can’t wait to see these guys perform someday, and this music video gives me a taste of that live feeling. If you haven’t listened to their entire debut album, Sigh No More, it’s definitely worth checking out.
I’m psyched that we added this tune into rotation today on mvyradio. Kind of weird timing since I filled in on the early morning shift today and decided to grab the single and play it as a “request” (my own request I guess you could say). A listener called in and was psyched that I played it… then this afternoon, my boss told me we were going to start playing it officially next week. Great tune, great band, and so wonderful that they’ve been nominated for the Best New Artist Grammy! Fingers crossed.
