RISE Vineyard Performing Arts

I’ve been doing some social media and graphic design work on the side, and RISE dance studio in Vineyard Haven is my newest client. It became pretty clear on day 1 – it’s TOUGH to get solid photos of dancers in action! I have captured a few moments I’m proud of…

And of course it’s a bit easier to get CUTE photos of the little kiddos :)))

phjess in Dressed MV Magazine

It seems like my To Do list is endless this Spring, but I’m so excited about every project…it’s a wonderful feeling that continuously pushes me past the exhaustion :))

I’m so honored to have a feature in Dressed MV magazine once again this year! Dressed MV is a local fashion magazine put together but the amazing Trena Morrison, who also coordinates Martha’s Vineyard Fashion Week. I just finished my contribution for the June issue and you’ll be able to find the magazine in shops around the island soon!

The look/content of the page is always evolving, but here’s the feature from last September, so you get an idea…

MV Tattoo on Instagram

During most afternoon hours, I can be found at Martha’s Vineyard Tattoo in Edgartown, where I work part-time. Mark Kito Fuentes is the artist and owner, and I help him do anything and everything – from answering the phone to graphic design to organizing events at the shop.

Mark has a personal Instagram account, but today I started an account for the store —

TPS Sessions: Jellybone Rivers

The music scene on Martha’s Vineyard sure does slow down in the offseason, but we find ways to keep busy! Over the winter, I asked some local musicians to record a bit of music and conversation with me at Phil daRosa‘s Oak Bluffs studio – The Print Shop. I also reached out to some local photographers to come by and capture these in-studio interviews. We’re calling the recordings “TPS Sessions” and I hope you enjoy them!

ROB_laughRob Myers, aka Jellybone Rivers, has spent many many years on Martha’s Vineyard as a fixture of the island music scene. You may have seen him behind a drum-set, for bands like Good Night Louise, The Hammerheads and Master Exploder. He also fronts the band Kahoots and has recently been honing in on some solo material that focuses on positivity. Below are some tunes that he played for me, and you can scroll down to hear a piece of our conversation.

“Thank  You”

“What To Do”

ROB_withJessAlthough Rob recently became a father (congrats!), he’s still heavily involved in the island’s music scene. Keep an eye out for him! And you can check out a recent Vineyard Gazette article he was featured in HERE. ROB_hands

Rob talks about an inspirational Positive Psychology course he took and how the song “Chip Away” came to be:

LYRICS: Paul Simon

“I Am A Rock” [alternate version]

I’ve heard this song SO MANY times before, but recently I heard this particular version from the Paul Simon Songbook (1965) and I was deeply moved. Here it’s just Paul and his guitar…and stripped down this way, every word cuts through me. It’s so brilliantly written. And at this particular time in my life, it’s really resonating with me.

Part of what this song means to me right now plays on the fact that I’m living on an island, heading into another winter. It’s an easy time to build up walls and pull away from people. I’m happy to report that I’m leaving the island today for a two week vacation that will have me in four different US cities visiting with some dear friends. I’m very glad to put off my inevitable hibernation for a little while longer.

“A winter’s day
In a deep and dark December
I am alone
Gazing from my window to the streets below
on a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow

I am a rock
I am an island

I’ve built walls
A fortress deep and mighty
That none may penetrate
I have no need of friendship, friendship causes pain
It’s laughter and it’s loving I disdain

I am a rock
I am an island

Talk of love
Well I’ve heard the word before
It’s sleeping in my memory
And I won’t disturb the slumber of feelings that have died
If I never loved I never would have cried

I am a rock
I am an island

I have my books and my poetry to protect me
I am shielded in my armor
Hiding in my room safe within my womb
I touch no one and no one touches me

I am a rock
I am an island

And a rock can feel no pain
And an island never cries”

Paul Simon

LOCAL: Lezlie

This weekend, a rare opportunity arose here on the island. One of the theaters became available to a friend of mine, free of charge. A theater group had cancelled their shows at the Katherine Cornell Theater and knew that (musician, photographer and producer-extraordinaire) Anthony Esposito could put together some great live music instead. And he did! Last night we were treated to several talented island singer/songwriters, capped off by Anthony’s band. Tonight, there’s another solid lineup, including Boaz & Shelagh, Good Night Louise, The Hammerheads and Lezlie. Best part – it’s FREE! Doors at 8pm.

Andrew Valenti & Leslie Schott make up this duo, and they’ve got a new album out called Intermittent Waves of Unusual Size and Force that you can DOWNLOAD HERE for FREE. The two of them play everything you hear on these tracks. They also wrote and recorded the songs themselves (and the mastering was done by Anthony). Check out the single, “Volcanoes”:

SONG: Willy Mason

“Pickup Truck”

While Willy Mason’s album Carry On is only officially out in the UK, we’ve gotten our hands on it here where Willy’s roots are – on the Vineyard. I suppose this is one of the perks of being a tight-knit, island community! Willy recently released this new music video for one of the tracks on the album, and it’s wonderful to see a familiar setting and familiar faces. “Pickup Truck” was filmed on the island, with Willy’s island friends…
