LYRICS: Ben Folds Five

“Do It Anyway”

Last year, fans of Ben Folds Five were PSYCHED when the band got back together again for the album The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind. I was never a big fan of BFF, but this album was solid, and it made my top ten list for 2012.

I was listening to this track today, admiring the dynamite lyrics:

“You might put your love and trust on the line
It’s risky, people love to tear that down
Let ’em try
Do it anyway
Risk it anyway

And if you’re paralyzed by a voice in your head
It’s the standing still that should be scaring you instead
Go on and
Do it anyway
Do it anyway

There will be times you might leap before you look
There’ll be times you’ll like the cover and that’s precisely why you’ll love the book
Do it anyway
Do it anyway

Tell me what I said I’d never do
Tell me what I said I’d never say
Read me off a list of the things I used to not like but now I think are ok”

LYRICS: Vampire Weekend

“Hudson”

I took a short break from listening to the new Vampire Weekend album nonstop but now I’m back to it. Each and every track on this CD has gotten to me in some way. This track is tucked away towards the very end of the album and its lyrics have really stood out to me lately.

“Over and over again
All these never-ending visions

Over and over again
Like a prize that’s changing hands

The time has come
The clock is such a drag
All you who change your stripes
Can wrap me in the flag

The lines are drawn
The map is such a drag
All you who change your stripes can wrap me in the flag”

LYRICS: Dawes

“Most People”

I guess I’m in one of those moods lately. I’m really listening intently to certain songs, hearing the words and being struck by them.

“If she listens very carefully
To a room of conversation
She can feel the planet orbiting through space
She hears pieces of arguments
Beginnings of jokes
And the odd lines of a song she cannot place

And it all makes up an image
That resists interpretation
Which is lately how she likes to see herself
How she does not believe in accidents
Doesn’t disagree out loud
And falls in love with every man she cannot help”

LYRICS: Feist

“My Moon My Man”

I love when a song I’ve heard many many times suddenly hits me in some other way. Sometimes it’s a part of the instrumentation that I hadn’t heard before or a harmony that starts to stand out to me…other times it’s the lyrics that suddenly ring out and completely floor me with some new meaning. Such is the case today with this Feist tune:

“My moon my man
So changeable and
Such a loveable lamb to me

My care my coat
Leave on a high note
There’s nowhere to go but on

Heart on my sleeve
Not where it should be
The song’s out of key again

My moon’s white face
What day and what phase
It’s the calendar page again

Take it slow
Take it easy on me
And shed some light
Shed some light on me please
Take it slow
Take it easy on me
And shed some light
Shed some light on me please

My moon and me
Not as good as we’ve been
It’s the dirtiest clean I know

My care my coat
Leave on a high note
There’s nowhere to go
There’s nowhere to go

My moon the moon’s my man…”

LYRICS: Ben Harper

“Walk Away”

I don’t like to get too personal on this blog…it’s really about the music. Let’s just say I’m going through a difficult time, and a friend recommended this tune. It definitely hits home. Simply stated message, but so powerful.

“With so many people
To love in my life
Why do I worry
About one?

But you put the happy
In my ness
You put the good times
Into my fun
And it’s so hard to do
And so easy to say
But sometimes
Sometimes you just have to walk away
Walk away
And head for the door”

LYRICS: You Won’t

“Who Knew”

You Won’t is Josh Arnoudse and Raky Sastri, a Boston-based duo who’s twisted sense of humor can be thoroughly entertaining and hilarious. I’ve seen these two perform live and I’m impressed by the sound they produce, not to mention their thoughtfully worded lyrics. They really nail the words with this tune and the music video is super creative and kooky.

“If I was a cute little kid
I would show you the painting I did
for you
But I’m up in the air
I’m not here and not there

If I was a sad-eyed 18
I would cut all the holes in your jeans
for you
But now what can I say?
I’m too little too late.”

LYRICS: Delta Spirit

“Yamaha”

This track is hiding at the very end of Delta Spirit’s latest self-titled album. It’s honestly been making me cry lately…with it’s gorgeous, lush sound and words that I think really make you FEEL the emotion. Tomorrow night I’ll see Delta Spirit LIVE with Dr. Dog at Lupo’s…

“So cold I know you can’t believe it
Sometimes you gotta face the feeling
When you don’t care if you get up again
There’s a thousand things I will not understand
How you’re dealing with the hell I put you through
If I had my way I’d be right there next to you
There’s certain things in life you cannot change
There’s certain things…
I hope you know I care.”
