TPS Sessions: Jemima James

The music scene on Martha’s Vineyard sure does slow down in the offseason, but we find ways to keep busy! Over the winter, I asked some local musicians to record a bit of music and conversation with me at Phil daRosa‘s Oak Bluffs studio – The Print Shop. I also reached out to some local photographers to come by and capture these in-studio interviews. We’re calling the recordings “TPS Sessions” and I hope you enjoy them!

Jemima tells me about her music roots:

A bit about the band she recorded her album with:

TONIGHT at Featherstone Center for the Arts, it’s the Jemima James Variety Show with MANY special guests performing outdoors from 6:30 – 8:30pm (kid and pet friendly!).

And be looking forward to a new release from Jemima in the near future…this fall she plans to record another album of some older songs she’s reworked and a few that are completely new.

LOCAL: Ross Livermore Band

GetInline-8

“Work Song”

Like so many other up-and-coming acts, the Ross Livermore Band believes a lot of their strength lies in their live performance. So they’ve decided to offer us a little taste of that experience each month, for an entire year. Every month, this Boston-based band has been offering a free download of a live recording and along with it, a polished music video. A treat for the ears and eyes!

Some of these singles are cover songs, done with a unique flavor that’s all their own. Others, like this one, are written by the band and really showcase their energetic, FUN vibe. Seems like “Work Song” is a pretty fitting track for this time of year, when we’re all getting swept away in another busy summer season…

TPS Sessions: Garrett James

GARRETT_playinGARRETT_studioGarrett James is from upstate NY but has been coming to Martha’s Vineyard for the past few summers to do what a lot of young people do – work and make some extra money. This past winter was his first on the island and he found it an incredibly useful time to lock himself away to write, create, and plan for a busy summer. I had a great time getting to know Garrett and his songwriting process a little better…below are three original songs he played for me and you can scroll down for a few clips from our conversation.

“Country Music Keeps On Truckin”

“Burlesque House”

“Wish You Could Stay”

INTERVIEW CLIPS:

We discuss his songwriting process for “Country Music Keeps On Truckin”:

Garrett talks about how theater has influenced him:

GARRETT_talkingGarrett is playing out and about quite a bit this summer so watch for him! This month he’ll be playing in Oak Bluffs at Park Corner on Thursdays and Offshore Ale on Saturdays. Full list of dates HERE.

LOCAL: Mally Smith

Last month, I had the honor of sitting front row center at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge for an incredible night of music and I’m still reeling from the experience. Many weeks worth of Monday night open mic winners went head to head in the Main Event! and myself and two other judges had the difficult task of slowly eliminating all but one winner. I’m excited to introduce you to some of these incredible artists!

Mally Smith was probably the most quiet performer of the Lizard Lounge Main Event. But as we leaned in to hear her soft voice and delicate finger picking, we were treated to some magical moments. There’s something almost hypnotizing about Mally’s sound. She has a new album out called Mally Smith & The Fertile Void. This is one of my favorite tracks:

In the very first round of the Open Mic Main Event, two great songwriters went against each other and it was an insanely tough decision to kick off a night filled with tough decisions. Bethel Steele was one of those songwriters to impress us in the first round, and while she didn’t move on, she certainly left an impression.

When it got down to the bottom 3 at the Lizard Lounge, it was terribly difficult to eliminate Aerica Lauren. All night we watched her pour the most genuine emotions into her performances. Aerica sailed through each round with just a little ukelele and her dynamic voice that reminded me of Bjork or Lisa Hannigan. I’m very excited to keep my eye on this artist and hear what she comes up with next. If you like the sound of this track, there’s plenty more of Aerica’s original music and fun covers on bandcamp and YouTube.
