Julian Velard – “Another Guy’s Song”

Julian Velard creates a different breed of pop music. It’s smart and funny…entertaining and truthful. Tonight at 9pm I’ll play his entire new album, Mr. Saturday Night. The album has a lot of upbeat, catchy, busy tunes, but one of my favorites is the very last track. It’s stripped down and slow…sad and thoughtful…and quite beautiful.

“Say what you want, do what you will
Just get it done with, go for the kill
Sand in my teeth, dirt in my hair
I feel like a beach towel, right now, a part of me’s dead
Now honey I finally know what you mean
The world doesn’t need a sad song
But I can’t stop singing my dreams

Don’t make me sing another guy’s song
That’s wrong, that’s wrong, that’s wrong…

Maui is nice, this time of year
Beautiful sunset, so I hear, you made it so clear
Your voice on the phone, snap crackles and pops
These days I’m staying at home playing games on a cereal box”

Julian Velard – “Sentimental”

Pop music is a funny thing…it takes on many various forms and it can skyrocket an artist to full-fledged fame, or it can cause them to fade and blur into all the other pop artists out there. Julian Velard is a stand-out pop musician in my eyes, and it’s only a matter of time before others catch on to his witty lyrics, unique voice, and  brilliant narrative style. Check out the single from his new album, Mr. Saturday Night:

Julian Velard – “Love Again for the First Time”

I’ve been talking a bit about music I’m looking forward to in 2011 and Julian Velard’s forthcoming album is one I’m very much anticipating. Mr. Saturday Night will be released on March 28th in the UK and hopefully soon after here in the states. It’ll include a tweaked version of this song, which isn’t exactly new, but which has a new (and beautifully shot) video, just posted today:

Julian Velard – “Do It Alone”

This is one of those songs that I will never get sick of. It’s so fun and well-written, I feel like I’m loving a new line each time I hear it. We’ve been playing the tune a bunch on mvy and getting great feedback. We’re psyched to have Julian come by the station in for an in-studio performance on May 4th. Meanwhile, here’s the video for “Do It Alone”:

NEW Music: Julian Velard

I am beyond thrilled to hold Julian Velard’s new album, The Planeteer in my hands. This album has been brewing for a few years now. Julian recently moved back to the states (from the UK) and released it independently. Born and raised in NYC, Julian is sure to be warmly welcomed home by fans at the Bowery Ballroom tonight. For those who have never experienced Julian Velard, I can best describe his music as cabaret pop. A bit like Elton John meets Rufus Wainwright. He’s got a deep, rich voice that masterfully tells compelling and relatable stories. His piano-playing lays down a strong foundation for his songs…but at the same time it’s still very fluid.

“Joni” starts off The Planeteer with a bang. It’s got a fun beat and beautiful strings that add to the song’s full sound. Track two, “Automatic”, is another one of my favorites. It starts out nice and easy and picks up some speed and some horns that make for a really dynamic chorus. I also really like the catchy “Jimmy Dean and Steve McQueen” which was released as a single last year. The album ends with a great acoustic version of “Love Again For The First Time” which reminds me of something you’d hear at the climax of a broadway show. My absolute favorite track is “A Dream”. It’s a slow love song that gives me goosebumps and almost brings me to tears each and every time I listen. Check out The Planeteer …you will not be disappointed.
