Jose Gonzalez – “Heartbeats”
I really love putting these alternate versions of songs out there in the mornings… yesterday I asked for suggestions from friends on Facebook, and my friend J reminded me of the tune “Heartbeats” that appears on Jose Gonzalez’s album, Veneer. I was familiar with the song, because my friend here on the island performed it out one night last summer and I asked him about it. I remembered him telling me he was covering the Jose Gonzalez version, but I never went and listened to the original – from the electronic Swedish band, The Knife. Well here’s the beautiful rendition from Gonzalez, and be sure to check out a little of the original… WOW! SO different.
Haunting and experimental are a few words that come to mind when I think of the band Junip. They recently performed live for Daytrotter and recorded three songs. Check it out…
Junip – “Always”
Like many others, I fell in love with the sounds of Jose Gonzalez after hearing his 2007 release, In Our Nature. After putting that album out, Gonzalez turned back to his long-time band and they finally got together a full-length release. I love this song from Junip’s highly anticipated album, Fields. And how about this video?! So funny and weird all at once. Check it out:
Junip – “Black Refuge”
I recently found out that Jose Gonzalez has been collaborating with a few friends under the band name Junip. When I first heard this, I was very skeptical. For me, Jose Gonzalez has always sounded perfect with just his mesmerizing voice and guitar… would he really have the same effect with a band? Turns out the answer is yes. Junip is every bit as haunting as Gonzalez solo, but with a full, dynamic sound. You can download a new song from Junip on their website… meanwhile here’s a song from their Black Refuge EP that came out in 2005:
