The Life Is Good Festival is this weekend, and I’m so excited to attend both days! This is a one of a kind fest, that’s truly one of the most special musical events I’ve attended. ALL proceeds go to help children in need, through the Life Is Good Playmakers. Because of this focus on children, the festival is a family affair, with a kids stage and LOTS of kids activities.
Aside from the beautiful family vibe that comes through at this fest, the lineup is always ridiculous! This year Jack Johnson and Hall & Oates headline. Oh, and throw in The Roots, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Amos Lee, and Dawes for good measure! Also new this year, there will be a Coffee House stage curated by Ryan Montbleau. He’ll perform a set each day along with Dwight & Nicole, Tall Heights, Mike Doughty, Session Americana, Amber Rubarth and more!
Here are a few lesser known acts I’m really excited to see:

“I Got You”
I’ve never disliked a song from the master of feel-good, Jack Johnson, but I wouldn’t say I liked the latest single when I first heard it. It took me many a listen to really enjoy this one, but now I love it…the guitar work is beautiful and it’s somewhat impossible not to sing along. Oh, and could the music video be any more adorable? I think not:
Jack Johnson headlines the LIFE IS GOOD festival September 21st and 22nd in Canton, MA…don’t miss this fest!
Jack Johnson – “Monsoon”
I love the imagery in this tune off of Jack Johnson’s album, Sleep Through the Static. It came on the radio as I was driving to the beach and I was struck by this line in particular:
“And if the moon
Can turn the tides it can pull the tears
and take them from our eyes
And make them into monsoons”
Especially here on the Vineyard, Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer. I’m taking the Hot Seat on Monday night – an hour on mvyradio where the host gets to play something a little different…anything they want. I decided to play music that I love listening to when it’s beautiful and sunny outside… summertime tunes…warm weather artists. Here’s my playlist:
Michael Franti – “Sound Of Sunshine”
311 – “Speak Easy”
Guster – “Careful”
The Strokes – “You Only Live Once”
Jack Johnson – “You And Your Heart”
Grateful Dead – “Shakedown Street”
Frightened Rabbit – “Swim Until You Can’t See Land”
Bob Marley – “Easy Skanking”
Xavier Rudd – “Time To Smile”
Trombone Shorty – “Something Beautiful”
Toots and the Maytals – “54-46 Was My Number”
Sublime – “DJs”
Galactic feat. Irma Thomas – “Heart Of Steel”
Vampire Weekend – “Giving Up The Gun”
Spoon – “The Underdog”
TUNE IN MONDAY NIGHT AT 9PM!
Jack Johnson – “You and Your Heart”
I’ve always classified Jack Johnson as a “summertime” artist. Not to say I wouldn’t listen to him during other seasons, but there’s that surfer, sunny, laid-back feeling to his tunes…perfect for the beach. And his new single “You and Your Heart” is no exception. His new album, To The Sea will be out June 1st, just in time for the summer.
