NEW: Ingrid Michaelson

“Girls Chase Boys”

Ingrid Michaelson will release a new album mid-April and this is a taste. The single is super catchy and quite poppy, not unlike most of Michaelson’s music. I’m definitely a fan of her stuff and this is no exception…I’m excited to hear more of the album, Lights Out.

SONG: Ingrid Michaelson

“Be OK”

As a big fan of Ingrid Michaelson, I’m not really sure how I had missed this song until recently. The album (also called Be OK), was released in 2008 between Girls and Boys (2006) and Everybody (2009). It includes some previously unreleased tracks, live cuts and covers. Like a lot of her songs, this one shines through its simplicity. Sometimes all you need is a catchy tune with lyrics that we can all relate to:

Ingrid Michaelson – Human Again

At the very start of  Human Again I’m  struck by urgent sounding strings and piano…but before even a full minute into the song, a dance-like drumbeat joins in to make a sound that I’m not totally familiar with. Track two follows suit with guitar and drum tracks creating epic beats that echo. At this point I’m taking off my headphones and listening through the speakers because I’m not used to this. Am I hearing it right?

Ingrid Michaelson was right when she said fans of her cute voice and stripped down ukelele sound could be disappointed with this album. It’s big. It’s layered. A lot of it’s clearly computer generated. I can’t say that particular sound is my favorite, but I’m excited for the evolution.

Track 4, “I’m Through” [*below] seems to be the first song to really grab me. It’s mostly piano and vocals…and that’s when I start to think maybe I’m actually one of those disappointed fans who misses stripped-down Ingrid.

“Black and Blue” has a playful beat and gets me more intrigued for the second half of the album. Right away, “Ribbons” is a bit different than the rest, but maybe the most pop sounding so far. Then I’m pulled in by “How We Love” because of its sparseness [*listen below]. Ingrid’s beautiful lyrics soar over repetitive guitar plucking and not much else:

“We hate the rain when it fills up our shoes
but how we love when it washes our cars
we love to love when it fills up the room
but when it leaves oh we’re cursing the stars”

But then it’s back to poppy beats and repeating, call and response vocals on “Palm Of You Hand” – probably the one track I’ll be sure to skip over on my next listen. I’ve grown fond of track 10, the single “Ghost”…I think she really comes off as honest and open on this particular song [*great live version below].

Track 12, “Keep Warm”,  surprises me by joining the lush, produced sound with a simpler sounding melody…I feel like this middle of the road approach is incredibly successful and this might be my favorite track on the album [*check out the tune below]. “End Of World” (fittingly) ends the album but unfortunately this is another track I’d probably not revisit…I don’t care for the harsh, high pitched vocals.

All in all this album seems to be sort of a mixed back sonically. I’ll have to listen more, but initially, the less produced tracks are more appealing to me. But I do always appreciate an artist taking chances and experimenting…pushing themselves and their music to different places…out of the comfort zone. That’s when the magic can really happen.

Ingrid Michaelson – “Ghost”

Soon we’ll have a new album from Ingrid Michaelson, which I’m excited about. She has become more mainstream and a lot of people are sensitive to her “glammed up” image these days, but despite this, I really think her music is coming straight from her heart and soul. I like the sounds of this single:

Ingrid Michaelson – “Die Alone”

One of my favorite performances at the Life is good festival was from Ingrid Michaelson. I’m a huge fan and it was my first time seeing her live. Not only did she sound great, but her stage banter was hilarious. I laughed a lot watching her, and at one point I also cried! She played my favorite song of hers, “The Chain”…a gorgeous, slower tune that builds up into a round. I had a perfect view of the volunteer who was signing the words to the song for the hearing impaired. What a beautiful sight! Hearing the song and seeing that visual interpretation along with it moved me to tears.

At one point in the set, Ingrid said she was going to do a happy song. She mentioned that it may not seem like a happy song based on the title, but it was. What she said made me pay close attention to the lyrics of this tune, “Die Alone”…

“I never thought I could love anyone
but myself.
Now I know I can’t love anyone
but youuuu
youuuu make me think that maybe I won’t die alone.
Maybe I won’t die alone.”

Ingrid Michaelson – “Can’t Help Falling In Love”

This song, originally recorded by Elvis, has always had a special place in my heart. As a kid, I can vividly remember LOVING UB40’s version of this tune and also “Red Red Wine”. Thanks to L for alerting me to this soft, beautiful (very different) rendition by Ingrid Michaelson:

I’ve gotta throw in the UB40 version :)

Daytrotter: Ingrid Michaelson

Browsing through the Daytrotter catalogue, I found this exceptional session with Ingrid Michaelson. It includes 3 of her most popular originals and a great cover of the classic Elvis tune, “Can’t Help Falling in Love”.

mvyradio ARCHIVES

There are over 700 performances in the mvyradio archives. It’s SO much fun sifting through all the exclusive content, and I’ve found some gems. Ingrid Michaelson performed at Cape Cinema very recently, but it was a recording from her show there back in 2007 that caught my attention…specifically her performance of “Breakable”.
