mvyradio HOT SEAT

Winter Doldrums. That’s what I called tonight’s Hot Seat. In January 2011 I did a similar show that I called Winter Melancholy. Whatever you want to call it, I’ve sure got it this time of year, and I know I’m not alone here on the island (and on the Cape). Many times I try to uplift my craptastic winter mood with happy music…when you close your eyes and listen to certain songs and artists, it’s like you’re transported to a warmer climate. But then there are times when I need a different sort of consolation. Those times are when I listen to music that really FEELS and SOUNDS like that gray winter bleakness. Here were my picks for tonight:

Bahamas “Lost In The Light”
Alexi Murdoch “All My Days”
Death Cab For Cutie “Transatlanticism”
The Weepies “They’re In Love, Where Am I?”
Radiohead “Backdrifts”
Damien Rice “The Blower’s Daughter”
The Tallest Man On Earth “Little River”
Lisa Hannigan “Paper House”
Josh Ritter “The Curse”
Bon Iver “Skinny Love”
The Decemberists “Hazards Of Love”
Feist “Caught A Long Wind”

Song Of The Day

Mumford & Sons – “Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight”

A Friend Of mvyradio came into the station today to record an hour-long program called The Hot Seat and he chose some great tunes…including Mumford & Sons covering The Beatles! He said his family doubted that anyone could really do a Beatles song better than John, Paul, George, and Ringo, and I think they have a good point. But there’s really something to be said about an artist making someone else’s song their own and bringing a fresh sound or mood to the table. I dig this version of “Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight”:

mvyradio HOT SEAT

Tonight on the Hot Seat, I decided to talk about some upcoming concerts/festivals since the summer season has unofficially been kicked off this holiday weekend. There are a TON of great live acts coming through the area, so I had to narrow it down and focus on just a few things that sound exciting to me. Here is my setlist, and where/when these artists are playing:

*Naukabout Music Festival in Falmouth (August 6th)*
Zach Deputy – “Coconut” [LIVE]
Jason Spooner – “Half a Mind”
Will Dailey – “Down the Drain”
Ryan Montbleau Band – “Slippery Road”

*Nectars MV in Edgartown*
Dwight & Nicole – “Cry, Cry” (August 20th)
Taj Mahal – “Lovin’ in My Baby’s Eyes” (July 24th)
Deer Tick – “Twenty Miles” (July 9th)

*Newport Jazz Festival (August 5-7)*

Esperanza Spalding – “Little Fly”
Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue – “On Your Way Down”

*Newport Folk Festival (July 30th & 31st)*
The Secret Sisters – “I’ve Got a Feeling”
M. Ward – “For Beginners”
The Civil Wars – “I Want You Back”

*Cape Cod Melody Tent*
Guster – “What You Wish For” (August 2nd)

*Bank Of America Pavilion*
Florence and the Machine – “Dog Days” (June 23rd)

mvyradio HOT SEAT

I struggled for probably half a day trying to think of a theme for my Hot Seat tonight, but then I kinda gave up. There’s so much great new music out there, I figured I could just play some that I’ve really been digging lately. Then I thought about my habit of listening to a particular song I love on repeat, and figured I could narrow it down to about 10 or 15 songs that I’ve been playing over and over again. So, “Songs On Repeat”… that’s what I’ll do tonight for the Hot Seat, and here’s my playlist:

“Dazzling Blue” Paul Simon
“Rumor Has It” Adele
“World News” Local Natives
“The King Knows How” Over the Rhine
“Doc Pomus” Ben Folds/Nick Hornby
“Helplessness Blues” Fleet Foxes
“They’re In Love, Where Am I?” The Weepies
“Little River” The Tallest Man On Earth
“Barton Hollow” The Civil Wars
“White Table” Delta Spirit
“Colors” April Smith and the Great Picture Show
“Dog Days Are Over” Florence and the Machine
“Second Chance” Peter Bjorn & John
“The Chain” Ingrid Michaelson

I’m very happy with how this came together! Hope you can check it out tonight at 9pm…

Song Of The Day

Jonathan Boulet – “A Community Service Announcement”

Thanks to Heide, a Friend of mvyradio, for introducing me to this song. Heide donated to our station and got a “virtual Hot Seat” – she sent us an hour of music and we’re playing it for her on Monday’s Hot Seat… giving her complete props for the choices, of course! Jonathan Boulet is a popular artist in his homeland of Australia, and this track is from his sophomore release North to South East to You, which came out earlier this year. This song is so damn good!
