The other day my friend admitted the soundtrack to the movie Garden State was life-changing for her. Will Zach Braff deliver again with his new film & soundtrack? Wish I Was Here is a film that Braff wrote with his brother and it comes out next month. The soundtrack features Paul Simon, Bon Iver, Cat Power, Coldplay and this new tune from The Shins:
Last minute, my boss asked me to sit in the HOT SEAT on Monday night, which means I play an hour of whatever I want on mvyradio at 9PM. I really had no idea what I’d do for a theme, but I said yes, and a day or two later I came up with a pretty fun idea.
I’m a huge fan of movies, and especially in the winter I watch them pretty frequently (a movie a day lately). I have a small collection of my favorites that I watch again and again…a BIG part of what makes me love them – the soundtrack ! Good music placed at a particular point in a film is SO memorable. I could probably do a 2 hour show with this theme, but I’ve got to choose! Here are a few I know I’ll include:
MOVIE: The Royal Tenenbaums
SONG: Nico – “These Days”
MOVIE: The Life Aquatic
SONG: David Bowie – “Life On Mars”
There are certain movies that really use music well… so well that you can’t even hear a certain song without thinking of the movie. The Garden State soundtrack is one of those rare soundtracks that totally works on every level. Today I heard this song by The Shins and immediately thought of the movie. Now I might have to go watch it.
