Galactic – “Magalenha”

I’ve been listening to Galactic at the gym lately…their album Ya Ka May is GREAT for getting me pumped up and moving. They’ve got a new album out that I’ve yet to explore called Carnivale Electricos and they cover the tune “Magalenha” on it…check it out, sounds good!:

Jam Cruise take 2

As if I wasn’t spoiled enough on Christmas and my birthday this year (I was!), I’m about to be taken on an adventure like none other… a 5-day cruise stopping in Labadee, Haiti and Falmouth, Jamaica. That alone is exciting…now add 30 or so musicians and bands performing pretty much ALL NIGHT. Oh and there will be a couple thousand music lovers on the boat ready to party! as well as 3 theme nights where we’ll all dress up and run amok. JAM CRUISE. This will be my second Jam Cruise and I’m BEYOND excited!

Especially with the frigid weather finally hitting us these days, it’s so hard to believe I’ll be on Jam Cruise in just 5 days, but it all starts on Monday. Here are some of the acts I’m most looking forward to:

Galactic
Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers
Keller & the Keels
Toots & the Maytals
Soulive
Dirty Dozen Brass Band
Surprise Me Mr. Davis
Toubab Krewe

Like last time, I’m going to try to post updates from the ship…internet connection is spotty, so I’ll do as much as I can. And of course I’ll have much to report when I return!

Song Of The Day

Galactic feat. Irma Thomas – “Heart Of Steel”

I played this song tonight on mvy and turned the volume up… way up! As I grooved out and sang along to it, I thought about how I haven’t gotten sick of this song despite the hundreds of times I’ve heard it since we added it into rotation in January. Then I thought… hell, this just may be the FUNKIEST song of the year. I think you might agree:

mvyradio HOT SEAT

Especially here on the Vineyard, Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer. I’m taking the Hot Seat on Monday night – an hour on mvyradio where the host gets to play something a little different…anything they want. I decided to play music that I love listening to when it’s beautiful and sunny outside… summertime tunes…warm weather artists. Here’s my playlist:

Michael Franti – “Sound Of Sunshine”
311 – “Speak Easy”
Guster – “Careful”
The Strokes – “You Only Live Once”
Jack Johnson – “You And Your Heart”
Grateful Dead – “Shakedown Street”
Frightened Rabbit – “Swim Until You Can’t See Land”
Bob Marley – “Easy Skanking”
Xavier Rudd – “Time To Smile”
Trombone Shorty – “Something Beautiful”
Toots and the Maytals – “54-46 Was My Number”
Sublime – “DJs”
Galactic feat. Irma Thomas – “Heart Of Steel”
Vampire Weekend – “Giving Up The Gun”
Spoon – “The Underdog”

TUNE IN MONDAY NIGHT AT 9PM!

LIVE: Galactic

Galactic

Wow. Just, WOW. I unexpectedly saw Galactic at Nectars last night. I went to the show ready to dance, but I really had no idea just how grooooovvvvyyyy it would be! They had trombone player Corey Henry from the Rebirth Brass Band sitting in, and the dynamic between Henry and Galactic sax player Ben Ellman was unstoppable! The first set was filled with funk, funk and more funk. Just when I needed a change, the second set brought some rock and R&B flavor to the room. What a night! One highlight was when Corey Henry JAMMED out on the slide trombone while jumping offstage and walking through the crowd…jumping up on the bar and just playing his heart out! My ears are buzzin’ and my body is still feeling the funkadelic New Orleans vibe. These guys are currently touring…definitely check them out live if you get the chance!
