I had the duty of watching the Grammys last night and providing some commentary on mvyradio’s Facebook and twitter pages. I’m extremely lucky to be working for an independent radio station where I choose and truly love the music we play — and that was very obvious to me last night. I posted and commented on all the “mvy” artists…which were really all the artists that I was interested in seeing…and left everything else out. The Black Keys doing “Lonely Boy” with The Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Dr. John blew me away. Jack White ROCKED – he surprised and impressed me. I thoroughly enjoyed Mumford & Sons, The Lumineers, and FUN…
and what I was most excited about (and what didn’t disappoint), was this tribute to Levon Helm done by Brittany Howard (Alabama Shakes), Mumford & Sons, Elton John, Mavis Staples, Zac Brown, and T-Bone Burnett:

Fun – “We Are Young” [feat. Janelle Monae]
LOVE LOVE LOVE this tune from a NYC band called Fun. Tonight my coworker played it during her new music show and said it reminded her of Queen. I totally hear it! It’s got that epic instrumentation and the singer has that higher range and the urgency in his voice. Neat video too:
If you’ve heard any of Brett Dennen’s recordings, I’m sure you got a sense of how FUN his music is right away…but seeing him live is a real treat. There’s something very FREE about him up on stage. I’m usually someone who’s really turned off by vocals that aren’t spot on (off key stuff bothers me), but with Dennen, it’s almost like he’s just dancing around and through the tune with his voice. Add that to his sweet demeanor and he’s got the audience in the palm of his hand. See him live when you can (maybe in Fall River on November 23rd!), but until then, check out his live Daytrotter session that was posted today.
