“I Got You”
I’ve never disliked a song from the master of feel-good, Jack Johnson, but I wouldn’t say I liked the latest single when I first heard it. It took me many a listen to really enjoy this one, but now I love it…the guitar work is beautiful and it’s somewhat impossible not to sing along. Oh, and could the music video be any more adorable? I think not:
Jack Johnson headlines the LIFE IS GOOD festival September 21st and 22nd in Canton, MA…don’t miss this fest!
Good Vibes Save Lives
Wow. This has been quite the week for me musically. Before I could even process the amazing Dr. Dog/Delta Spirit show (I’ll write about it soon!) I found myself at the Life Is Good festival at Prowse Farm in Canton, MA. This is my second time attending the fest with mvyradio and I can’t quite express how FEEL GOOD it is! Every musician is chosen with positivity and good vibes in mind – this year the lineup includes Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds, Michael Franti, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Trombone Shorty, Eric Hutchinson, Soulive, Sara Bareilles, Allen Stone, Ryan Montbleau Band and more! The fest is family friendly with a kids stage and “chill zone”. And the most amazing part of the Life Is Good festival is that 100% of the proceeds go to help kids in need. Because of the great cause, the amazing music, and the feel good, welcoming vibe, everyone seems to have a smile on their face. This weekend’s perfect weather certainly helped too!
Today the fest is SOLD OUT, but you can watch LIVE festival coverage HERE!
And check out mvyradio’s Facebook page, for our favorite moments from the fest!

It seems impossible to even wrap my mind around all that I experienced on Jam Cruise, so it’s definitely not easy to wrap it up in a single blog post. But I have to move on from the experience at some point (on my blog at least). So I’ll try to express how special this cruise really is.
Any cruise is special. If you’ve been on one of these luxury ships, you know…the cabins, the lounges, the restaurants, the theatre, the bars, the pool deck, the spa, the VIEW – the MSC Poesia was certainly a nice place to stay for a few days! So imagine this ship (pictured above), and add 30 or so amazing musical acts and 3,000 cruisers ready to party. Now imagine there are about 75 scheduled performances in 6 different ‘venues’ on the ship all over the course of just 5 days. Jam Cruise is basically a huge music festival ON A CRUISE SHIP. Sounds fun, right?
But what REALLY sets this event apart from others is the fact that musicians and fans are experiencing the whole thing together. When I took my first ride in the elevator on night one, it was with George Porter Jr. and his wife. For my first meal on board, I sat behind Marco Benevento and his family (really cute kids!). And when I went into the gym to work out, I saw Brad Barr coming out of the sauna in a towel. These interactions add a sort of surreal feeling to it all. But what’s really special about everyone being ‘stuck’ on a boat together, is that musical magic is bound to happen. Over and over and over again. And fans and musicians alike are WOWed.
Surprise sit ins, jams, impromptu performances, unexpected covers, rogue sets all over the boat…and all night long. Nobody wants to miss these magical moments, so sleeping is not a priority. Theme nights encourage creative costumes, so everyone dresses however the hell they want! The energy on board is heightened, the attitude in general is extremely positive, and oh yea, it’s 75 degrees and sunny. Put that in a ship and sail it…Jam Cruise is really like nothing else out there. Everyone leaves thinking – did that just happen? And… it did!
Tune in tonight at 9pm, when I host THE HOT SEAT on mvyradio. I’ll play music from the artists performing at next weekend’s Life Is Good festival. I’ve also talked with James MacDonald, who’s the producer of the festival, and he had some wonderful background to share about the company as well as the mission of the Life Is Good playmakers. This is more than just a fun festival with a dynamite lineup…100% of festival proceeds go towards helping children in need. Great music and a great cause. Here’s my playlist for tonight:
Ray LaMontagne – “You Are The Best Thing”
Ingrid Michaelson – “Way I Am”
The Hold Steady – “Sequestered In Memphis”
The Avett Brothers – “Kick Drum Heart”
Martin Sexton – “Happy”
Levon Helm – “When I Go Away”
Robert Randolph & the Family Band – “If I Had My Way”
Raphael Saadiq – “Stone Rollin'”
Maceo Parker – “Hallelujah, I Love Her So”
Michael Franti – “Sound Of Sunshine
Dwight & Nicole – “Cry, Cry”
Ryan Montbleau Band – “Glad” [LIVE at Life Is Good]
Ingrid Michaelson – “Everybody”
TONIGHT AT 9PM!
LIFE IS GOOD FESTIVAL
Well, after months of planning and organizing and anticipating, Newport Folk Festival 2011 is upon us! This year is by far the best Newport Folk lineup yet (I can say that with certainty because there’s proof – tickets sold out weeks in advance for the first time in the festival’s history!), and I’m beyond excited to attend the event with mvyradio.
Realistically, I won’t be seeing much music at all. Just like last year, I’ll be at our mvy tent in the Quad area backstage with several computers and a lot of responsibility. However, this is something I’m going to enjoy immensely…I’ll be editing every live performance to ready it for posting on our website and I’ll also be heading our Facebook and Twitter coverage.
Regardless of the fact that I won’t be strolling around enjoying the music from in front of the stage, I’m still psyched to just be in the presence of some amazing artists and to hear their performances from a distance (or through my headphones shortly afterwards).
Here are the artists I’m MOST excited about seeing/hearing:
The Civil Wars
Tegan & Sara**
Chris Thile & Michael Daves
Justin Townes Earle**
**With luck, I’ll be able to catch a portion of these sets since they’re on the Quad stage…the closest to our tent!
Make sure you check in with mvyradio either on your computer or your mobile phone to follow our coverage…we’ll be STREAMING SETS LIVE FROM THE MAIN STAGE! Also visit us on FACEBOOK where we’ll be sharing our entire Newport experience!
