I’m not normally they type to listen to LOUD music, but lately I’ve really loved BLASTING the volume on certain songs. This track in particular sounds brilliant when the speakers are nearly breaking in my car :)) I cannot stop listening! Crank it!:
I’ve been on a major Delta Spirit binge lately (again). This track on their latest self-titled release has been really hitting me hard lately. It’s a gorgeous tune with some really heartfelt lyrics…
“Drug in by the rain, all the crooked ways I think A wish as in a mood to die But life, it is good, no matter how far you sink Sometimes sitting still is better than to drop When you’re down in a hole When your heart’s weighed down like gold There is a hand that can reach you there”
There was a ton of great music this year, but as I mentioned before, I wasn’t as adventurous musically as I have been in the past. I decided to keep the list short, and these 10 albums were clear standouts. I can think of some other artists/songs/albums that did catch my attention this year, so I’ll talk close calls later this week…
1. Dr. Dog – Be the Void
2. Alabama Shakes – Boys and Girls
3. Bahamas – Barchords
4. Mumford & Sons – Babel
5. Delta Spirit – Delta Spirit
6. The Tallest Man On Earth – There’s No Leaving Now
7. John Mayer – Born and Raised
8. JD McPherson – Signs and Signifiers
9. Fiona Apple – The Idler Wheel…
10. Ben Folds Five – The Sound of the Life of the Mind
So, lately I’ve been stuck musically. I haven’t really been seeking out new music or really opening myself up to it and I suppose I could use being busy as an excuse. I’ve been basically listening to the same few albums again and again. But it’s not necessarily a bad thing! These albums have some seriously stunning tracks on them. Here are a few that maybe I’ve posted before, but I cannot get enough of:
Bahamas – “Lost In The Light”
This gorgeous song floors me every time. New video:
~~~
The Tallest Man On Earth – “Wind and Walls”
Every track on There’s No Leaving Now is quite beautiful:
~~~
Feist – “Graveyard”
Can’t believe the beginning of this tune and the end are actually in the same song:
~~~
Delta Spirit – “Ransom Man”
Sometimes when you listen to an album long enough, the songs you used to skip become your favorites:
~~~
Wilco – “One Sunday Morning”
I’ve found that this 12-minute final track on The Whole Love is perfect for an up island drive:
This track is hiding at the very end of Delta Spirit’s latest self-titled album. It’s honestly been making me cry lately…with it’s gorgeous, lush sound and words that I think really make you FEEL the emotion. Tomorrow night I’ll see Delta Spirit LIVE with Dr. Dog at Lupo’s…
“So cold I know you can’t believe it Sometimes you gotta face the feeling When you don’t care if you get up again There’s a thousand things I will not understand How you’re dealing with the hell I put you through If I had my way I’d be right there next to you There’s certain things in life you cannot change There’s certain things… I hope you know I care.”
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m beyond excited to see Dr. Dog at Lupo’s in Providence on Wednesday. I’ve never seen them live before and the cherry on top is that one of my favorite bands is opening – Delta Spirit! This song and video get me SO PUMPED for the show!!!!!
My Delta Spirit obsession has gotten out of hand this summer. I actually forced myself to take the CDs out of my car and listen to something else yesterday…yet today I still find myself thinking about their songs…and the beautiful words to this particular tune:
“now with my heart wide open I listen to the wind just for a word sure I know it’s futile but that’s all I have in this world to look down from the hill and howl at the moon all the tears I cried never salted any wound well the earth is so tender and cruel if you’re not there it’s still so beautiful”
Seems like Delta Spirit will provide the soundtrack to my summer this year…seeing as I cannot stop switching back and forth between their new self-titled album and 2010’s History From Below. This song is from the latter, and it’s one that snuck up on me. The constant drone in the background might’ve had me tuning out at first, but now I’m held captive. The delicate finger-picked melody, echoing background vocals and final build fit together to create something special within this tune:
This Delta Spirit song has had me mesmerized for the past week or so. It starts off so trance-like…with the repetitive sounds and words building up to some pretty heavy hitting guitar and drums. I originally wasn’t impressed by the song because of that first minute or so… but the changes that happen from 1:50 to about 2:40 are just UNREAL. If you have 3 and 1/2 minutes, sit and take this one in fully:
I CANNOT stop listening to this song…I literally play it every time I get into my car. Aside from the lush instrumentation, the words are really what move me. The first half of the song has such simple lyrics, you almost find youself thinking it’s cliche…and then the second half delivers some really great emotion. I feel like it’s another one of those songs that’s incredibly universal. I think we can all relate to the pain here, and that’s somehow a beautiful thing.
“I want you to move to California for yourself, I want you to find whatever your heart needs, I want you to move to California for yourself, but not for me.
I want you to go out there and find somebody else, I want him to treat you like I know he should, I want you to find somebody new for yourself, if not for me.
all of the feelings that I know you never felt, and all of the simple words you never said, I want you to keep them like a secret to yourself, they’re not for me.
I want you to wander silent past my outstretched arms, I want you to hide yourself from all I see, and though my heart will fight until its dying breath, you’re not for me.”
