This song is perfectly lovely but I will say – it’s NOT one of my favorite new Deer Tick tunes. It’s really the lyrics and the visuals here that I want to share with you. You could watch it muted… even with no sound, this video has A LOT of power. It’s beautifully shot, and as always, John McCauley’s words seem to nail what we all feel in a simple way that we can all understand:

We’re a week into 2014 but I’m still “stuck” on a few songs that came out last year. These tunes NEVER seem to get old for me. I could listen to them on a loop and just turn it up louder and louder each time around. As I put this list together, it strikes me that I’ve never felt so strongly about a year-end list of songs. It may sound weird, but I think 2013 was a really solid year for SINGLES.
I also noticed a real common thread here – all are very epic sounding, strong tracks with lots of energy and soul.
Here are my favorite singles of 2013:
Tedeschi Trucks Band “Made Up Mind”
Paul McCartney “New”
The Head and The Heart “Shake”
Vampire Weekend “Unbelievers”
Deer Tick “The Dream’s In The Ditch”
The Wheeler Brothers “My Time”
Sons Of Fathers “Roots & Vine”
Eric Clapton “Gotta Get Over”
Amos Lee “The Man Who Wants You”
Serena Ryder “Stompa”
I’ve seen Deer Tick perform several times over the years and I never quite felt the excitement I hope to feel. Their music can be LOUD. It can be hard-edged, so to speak. This new album, despite it’s title, has a lot of lighter material that I absolutely love. I wonder if the change in sound is disappointing to their older fans…but it’s certainly gained some new ones…
“The Dream’s In The Ditch”
Here’s a new single from Deer Tick’s forthcoming album Negativity (out on 9/24). I’m happily surprised to hear these guys polish their sound up a bit…it’s a bit softer and lighter and it’ll sound great on mvyradio. I’d imagine some hardcore fans could be disappointed for the same reason. Can’t wait to get the full release in my hands to fully hear how their sound has evolved.
TONIGHT at Flatbread by the MV airport…this Providence based band will take the stage, with local support from Dukes County Love Affair. Doors open at 9PM, music starts at 10PM. Tickets are $18 at the door. Deer Tick’s sound will please many music fans…for those who like folk, alt-country, punk, or rock. They really have a little bit of everything, and above all, an energetic live show.

Middle Brother – “Me Me Me”
Oh man, what luck! I’ve been extremely excited about the new supergroup, Middle Brother (which consists of the lead singers of Deer Tick, Dawes, and Delta Spirit). What I’ve heard online, I’ve loved and since we haven’t gotten the full length album into the studio, I’ve been thinking about actually purchasing it (oh the horror!). However, without any prompting, my musically conscious friend sent me the album the other day! Thanks Vee! Can’t wait to take it all in… here’s the single, “Me Me Me”:
