VIDEO: David Bowie

“The Stars (Are Out Tonight)”

David Bowie is back and certainly as weird as ever! This creepy music video has stuck with me since I first watched it. Gotta hand it to Bowie, it’s a great concept…here he (and director Floria Sigismondi) reverses the roles of famous people and those who are obsessed with them, highlighting how absurd it all can get. Tilda Swinton is a perfect co-star for Bowie, and overall the video is the perfect mix of unsettling and thought-provoking:

mvyradio HOT SEAT

Last minute, my boss asked me to sit in the HOT SEAT on Monday night, which means I play an hour of whatever I want on mvyradio at 9PM. I really had no idea what I’d do for a theme, but I said yes, and a day or two later I came up with a pretty fun idea.

I’m a huge fan of movies, and especially in the winter I watch them pretty frequently (a movie a day lately). I have a small collection of my favorites that I watch again and again…a BIG part of what makes me love them – the soundtrack ! Good music placed at a particular point in a film is SO memorable. I could probably do a 2 hour show with this theme, but I’ve got to choose! Here are a few I know I’ll include:

MOVIE: The Royal Tenenbaums
SONG: Nico – “These Days”

MOVIE: The Life Aquatic
SONG: David Bowie – “Life On Mars”

MOVIE: Garden State
SONG: The Shins – “New Slang”

Tune in on Monday at 9PM for my HOT SEAT on mvyradio.com

Soundtrack: The Life Aquatic

I mentioned soundtracks to movies the other day, and the soundtrack to The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is one of my favorites. In fact, this movie is probably my second favorite movie ever. I know it seems sort of strange, but there’s something about it. I love it more and more each time I watch it. Brazilian musician, Seu Jorge does several Portuguese remakes of David Bowie tunes for the movie/soundtrack, including a gorgeous rendition of “Life On Mars”:

Here’s the scene where the David Bowie version of “Life On Mars” is used… one of my favorite scenes of the movie:
