Although I will admit that this Dr. Dog album is not my favorite of their releases, their sound is still unique and strong and dynamic on B-Room. This band is one of my favorite bands making music right now (if not my favorite). I decided recently that if I was asked to recommend ONE lesser known contemporary band to someone who wanted some new music, it would definitely be Dr. Dog.
The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You
Aside from having one of the most epic album titles of the year, Neko Case has continued to floor me with The Worse Things Get… Her emotional, twisted lyrics and one of a kind sound make for an incredible album that’s sure to be in my top ten of the year.
She pretty much had me with the line: “If I puked up some sonnets, would you call me a miracle?”
This album was released way back in January, so it might be easy to forget about it. For me, it’s easy to remember how ELECTRIC this combination was. It just works. They’ve really found a common language. Ben Harper wrote every track on this album specifically for this project and that has always impressed me…it’s so common to see two artists come together for an album of cover songs. But this is something new.
Ben Harper/Charlie Musselwhite
I like some pop music, and for me, John Mayer’s pop sound has just gotten better and better with each new album. It’s hard for me to know where exactly Paradise Valley will land on my year-end “best of” list, but I know with singles like “Wildfire” and “Paper Doll”, it’s going to be on there somewhere.
