SONG: The Lone Bellow

“You Never Need Nobody”

We recently started playing this song on mvyradio and it immediately caught my ear. The Lone Bellow is a trio based in Brooklyn who harmonize beautifully. Zach Williams is the primary songwriter, and it’s clear he connects passionately with the words he has written. After listening to this group perform live, I’m not surprised they were one of the first artists announced for the upcoming Newport Folk Festival.

ALBUM: Jesse Dee

On My Mind/In My Heart

Tonight I’ll feature this new album from Boston-based soul singer Jesse Dee as our Album Of The Week on mvyradio. You can “tune in” at 9PM to hear the album from start to finish! After years of touring and recording independently, Jesse has signed onto Alligator Records for this release and I’m excited about this new partnership! Alligator Records works with country, blues and soul artists that we love at mvyradio and Jesse Dee fits right in.

The simplest way I can sum up this album is by saying it’s filled with HORNS and HOOKS. And if you’re not familiar with Jesse Dee’s voice, it’s one of the most powerful and soulful voices you’ve likely heard in a while. Jesse’s songwriting is filled with hopeful and encouraging lyrics. This is a soul album that lifts the spirits and makes you smile. I think the title track of the album really conveys that:

mvyradio’s Local Music Cafe

Tonight I’m filling in for Alison Hammond on the Local Music Cafe. You can hear the show from 9-10pm at mvyradio.com. If you use iTunes, you can click on “radio” and choose “eclectic” to find mvyradio.

Here are a few of the artists I’ll feature on tonight’s show:

Tall Heights are one of my favorite up and coming Boston-based acts. Think Kings Of Convenience or Bon Iver…

Kenny Roby used to be the frontman of the Raleigh, NC-based band 6 String Drag…a band that was signed and produced by Steve Earle. Now Roby is solo and his sound is really something special. For fans of Rufus Wainwright, Jens Lekman and Devendra Banhart.

The album art from NYC trio Guards really caught my eye so I threw their CD in the player and I was delighted with their pop-infused single “Ready To Go”…

SONG: Matt Costa

“Miss Magnolia”

This song is just enough familiarity and just enough originality (if you don’t hear it right away, Matt Costa is borrowing from Mungo Jerry’s “In The Summertime” with the chorus of the tune). “Miss Magnolia” popped up when I was listening to one of those music stations online that stream songs they think you might like.

As a DJ, I obviously like to guide and be guided when it comes to music. I have nothing against online music sites that have computers choosing the tunes, but I do believe in the human touch of radio or podcasts with a host telling you just what you’re hearing and how they feel about it. There’s nothing quite like that.

If you haven’t yet, you can get that human touch along with great music at my radio station – which streams online just like Pandora…but we’re free to use and commercial free. A free iPhone, Blackberry or android app will allow you to listen to mvyradio, plus you can find us easily at iTunes – just choose “Radio”>”Eclectic”>”mvyradio”.

…here’s the Mungo Jerry tune:

mvyradio HOT SEAT

Winter Doldrums. That’s what I called tonight’s Hot Seat. In January 2011 I did a similar show that I called Winter Melancholy. Whatever you want to call it, I’ve sure got it this time of year, and I know I’m not alone here on the island (and on the Cape). Many times I try to uplift my craptastic winter mood with happy music…when you close your eyes and listen to certain songs and artists, it’s like you’re transported to a warmer climate. But then there are times when I need a different sort of consolation. Those times are when I listen to music that really FEELS and SOUNDS like that gray winter bleakness. Here were my picks for tonight:

Bahamas “Lost In The Light”
Alexi Murdoch “All My Days”
Death Cab For Cutie “Transatlanticism”
The Weepies “They’re In Love, Where Am I?”
Radiohead “Backdrifts”
Damien Rice “The Blower’s Daughter”
The Tallest Man On Earth “Little River”
Lisa Hannigan “Paper House”
Josh Ritter “The Curse”
Bon Iver “Skinny Love”
The Decemberists “Hazards Of Love”
Feist “Caught A Long Wind”

ALBUM: Dawes

Stories Don’t End

When you’re REALLY sick (the stomach bug kind), there’s not a lot of joy in the process of getting better. There’s a lot of sleep, a lot of fluids, a lot of pleading with your digestive system…but there’s not a lot of music. At least there wasn’t for me these past 4 days. Getting “must call out of work” sick made me stop and realize how much I appreciate my job as a DJ – where I get to pass along a minimum of 4 hours of music a night, simultaneously taking all that in myself. While I battled the sickness, I was also thankful for a note in my inbox that included a link to this new album preview – it sure sounds like Dawes will treat us to some more kickass tunes in April!

Thanks to PJ for employing me, and for sending me this Dawes video while I was at home sick!

SONG: Ben Gibbard

“Bigger Than Love” [feat. Aimee Mann]

Wow. For those who didn’t hear, the radio station I work for has succeeded in raising $600,000 to continue as a non-profit, commercial-free, web-based operation. mvyradio lives on! I will say, the past two months of fundraising has taken a lot out of me and distracted me quite a bit from this blog (and other things, like laundry ;) BUT, I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. It’s been absolutely incredible to hear from over 3,700 listeners who think the world of this little radio station. THANK YOU to everyone who’s showed their support!

So, I’m going to try to check in here much more often…as always, there has been no shortage of great music! This track from Ben Gibbard’s solo album Former Lives has really grabbed me recently:

“It’s bigger than love
brighter than all the stars combined
dwarfing the sun
burning within my heart and mind”

SAVE mvy Campaign close to goal!

The time is now…

save mvy

After almost two months of campaigning, mvyradio is nearing the $600,000 mark — as I write, we are at $526,185 in pledges!

Once we reach that 600K goal, we will take a leap of faith into a new chapter of our nearly 30 year history. We will no longer broadcast on 92.7FM, but we will continue to stream online as we have since 1998. We will be commercial free, completely non-profit and listener supported. The money raised will cover our first year of expenses and we will work hard to secure a future online as well as a new spot somewhere on the FM dial.

We’ve received pledges from 48 of the 50 U.S. states and from 14 countries around the world. It’s clear that this radio station is something special…something worth preserving. Help to get us to our goal. PLEDGES ARE BEING MATCHED RIGHT NOW.

SAVE mvyradio!

Jawsmvyradio

If you haven’t heard, the radio station I work for is at a crossroads. Our FM signal was sold in November, but we have the opportunity to continue as a web based non-profit…IF we can raise the money for our first year of expenses. Since the news of the sale, we’ve been fundraising to try to get to our $600,000 goal. As I type, we are at over $363,000 in pledges. I’m hoping you can make a pledge today.

What makes TODAY special? – a generous donor who wishes to remain anonymous will MATCH EVERY DONATION MADE. So please READ OUR STORY and MAKE A PLEDGE to help save an independent radio station with deep roots in a very special place – Martha’s Vineyard. If you’ve visited, spent a week, spent a summer, or live here year-round, you know how special this island is…and for mvyradio to go silent would be a blow to this community and a loss to online listeners around the globe. I can’t count the number of people who have told us that we bring them back to MV when they can’t be here. A recent tweet from a listener read, “Turned on WMVY and white wine and sand started pouring out of the speakers”.

On the flip side, some folks who listen have never set foot on the Vineyard, but they say we provide what their local stations don’t – independently chosen music, both old and new, with refreshing perspective and REAL, personable DJs.

If you’ve never listened to mvyradio, you can check it out easily on iTunes — just choose “Radio” on the left sidebar and then choose “Eclectic” and scroll down to M for mvyradio. If you don’t use iTunes, you can CLICK HERE to listen.

MAKE A PLEDGE HERE
and remember TODAY, your pledge will be matched!

SONG: Dawes

“Fire Away”

Last night on the mvyradio Hot Seat, I focused on contemporary artists and the musicians who have inspired their sound. When it came time to show how the band Dawes has been inspired by Jackson Browne, it seemed fitting to play a song that features Browne on backing vocals. I feel like this track can get lost on the Dawes album, Nothing Is Wrong, but I was reminded of just how good it is when I revisited it. It’s lengthy, but if you can listen until the end, it just keeps getting better and better.
