Live, acoustic, & cover tunes… that’s the name of a morning feature we do on mvyradio and it’s a very self explanatory one! Basically we feature songs that you may recognize, done a little bit differently. A live recording, an acoustic version, or a different artist taking a crack at it. Or any combination of the three!
Today I did a few Radiohead covers:
Punch Brothers “Kid A”
Ingrid Michaleson “Creep”
Mark Ronson “Just”
Live, Acoustic & Covers – weekdays // 8:20am & 5:20pm on mvyradio
Newport Folk Festival came SUDDENLY and now we’re in the midst of it.
AMAZING music is lined up for the weekend…I can’t wait to share some of what I’m taking in.
Meanwhile, check out mvyradio’s coverage on Facebook and twitter…and listen in all weekend because we’re airing recorded sets from the main stage!
Friends from Texas formed this LA-based band a few years ago and now they’re poised to released their first full length album. This track is a single we’ve been playing on mvyradio and it’s from a 4-song EP which you can stream HERE.
On the Hot Seat Monday, I focused on song lyrics that I’ve been loving lately. You can hear the show again tonight (Sunday) at 10pm on mvyradio.
Here’s what I played:
Dr. Dog “Long Way Down”
Feist “My Moon My Man”
Bob Dylan “Most Likely You’ll Go Your Way and I’ll Go Mine”
Dawes “Most People”
Paul Simon “I Am A Rock” [acoustic]
Vampire Weekend “Horchata”
St. Vincent “Digital Witness”
Tedeschi Trucks Band “Made Up Mind”
Ben Folds Five “Do It Anyway”
Paul Simon “Train in the Distance” [demo version]
Laura Marling “Where Can I Go”
The Belle Brigade “Losers”
Alabama Shakes “Hang Loose”
Rilo Kiley “More Adventurous”
Tonight at 9PM I’ll feature Johnny Flynn’s latest album, Country Mile, for mvyradio’s Album of the Week. I really enjoy Flynn’s sound a lot and there are plenty of killer songs on this album, including the final track…such a beautiful way to end it:
Last night I explored the music of Mark Ronson and Dan Auerbach on mvyradio’s Hot Seat. I wasn’t quite sure how the hour-long show would turn out but I had the inspiration the night before and I thought I’d give it a shot. These are two of my favorite contemporary music producers – Ronson won Producer Of the Year at the 2008 Grammys and Auerbach took away that same award at this year’s ceremony.
I was actually quite pleased with how the two producers complimented each other. I played a set of music produced by Ronson and then a set produced by Auerbach and so on. All told, the hour of music was pretty stellar (*See list below). You can hear a replay of the show Sunday night at 10pm on mvyradio.
This is one of Ronson’s tracks that I really love, a cover of the Radiohead song “Just” with Alex Greenwald of the band Phantom Planet singing the vocals:
*mvyradio Hot Seat – 11.18.13
“New” Paul McCartney
“Rehab” Amy Winehouse
“Just” (Radiohead cover) Mark Ronson feat. Phantom Planet
“Valerie” Amy Winehouse/Mark Ronson
“Lonely Boy” The Black Keys
“Revolution” Dr. John
“Never Go Back” Grace Potter & the Nocturnals
“Lasan” Michael Kiwanuka
“Alligator” Paul McCartney
“Cold Shoulder” Adele
“You Know I’m No Good” Amy Winehouse
“God Put A Smile Upon Your Face” (Coldplay cover) Mark Ronson feat. Daptone Horns
“You Can’t Be Told” Valerie June
“Loneliest Soul” Grace Potter & the Nocturnals
“Simple Twist of Fate” [Bob Dylan]
Wow. Just wow. This cover gives me goosebumps before she even starts singing. Sarah Jarosz is a very young phenom in the bluegrass world. At age 18 she released her debut album and was nominated for a Grammy award. This year she released her third album, Build Me Up From Bones, as she graduated from the New England Conservatory of music in Boston. At 22 years old, with her flawless voice and mastery of multiple instruments, I think it’s an understatement to say her career looks promising!
Build Me Up From Bones is where you’ll find this incredibly beautiful Bob Dylan cover and tonight you can hear the album from start to finish on mvyradio’s Album Of the Week (9PM).
