The latest music news I’m excited about.

Song Of The Day

Adele – “I’ll Be Waiting”

With Grammy nominations revealed, my only prediction is that Adele will be taking home Album Of the Year for 21. I remember how angry I got over the summer when some dude at a bar told me Adele would be a one hit wonder. I thought it made him sound just plain stupid, considering she’s already had more than one hit. While “Rolling in the Deep” (up for Record and Song of the year) was a SMASH hit, Adele also nailed it with so many other tracks on her latest album. The tune “I’ll Be Waiting” is one of my favorites. To drive home how damn talented she is, here’s a live version:

Justin Townes Earle – “Harlem River Blues”

I’m really diggin’ this song – the title track from Justin Townes Earle’s new album. Unfortunately he’s had some personal issues lately… a sliced hand causing a Newport Folk cancellation, assault and battery charges pressed against him by a club owner, and most recently a postponed tour and self-imposed rehab. It’s interesting to think about the personal lives of musicians. Despite all the troubles he seems to be having personally, his musical talent cannot be denied. I hope he finds the strength to get it together and continue on with his career.

09.09.09

The day has finally arrived. After MUCH anticipation, The Beatles Rock Band has been released today…along with the entire Beatles catalogue, remastered. After checking out a bit of footage and hearing from people who’ve played the game, I cannot wait to play Beatles Rock Band. Even Ray Whitaker, the host of our Beatles program, Just Four Guys, says the game is unbelievable. I’m about to sound really dorky, but I’m especially excited that (for the first time ever) the vocals feature 3-part harmonies!

Here’s a sweet trailer for the game:

Beatles Rock Band

RB

On September 9th, Rock Band releases a game focused entirely on The Beatles. I just saw the opening cinematic for the game and it’s a REALLY cool little video. CLICK HERE to watch it. I totally understand where some people are coming from when they hate on games like this…they think, ‘Hey kids, pick up a real guitar and learn how to play!’ Honestly, I really enjoy playing these kind of games. And I have tried to play the guitar…it’s clearly a whole different experience. When it comes to young kids playing video games in general, I believe parents should make sure it’s always in moderation. I’m psyched to someday try The Beatles: Rock Band. Check out some of the tunes that will be featured:

I Saw Her Standing There
Twist And Shout
Do You Want To Know A Secret
I Want to Hold Your Hand
Can’t Buy Me Love
I Wanna Be Your Man
I Feel Fine
Eight Days A Week
Day Tripper
Paperback Writer
Taxman
And Your Bird Can Sing
Yellow Submarine
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
With a Little Help from My Friends
Within You Without You / Tomorrow Never Knows
I Am The Walrus
Back In The U.S.S.R.
Octopus’s Garden
Birthday
Revolution
Here Comes The Sun
Dig A Pony
Get Back
I’ve Got A Feeling

Koko Taylor: 1928-2009

Koko

Blues legend Koko Taylor passed away today at age 80. She died of complications from a May 19th gastrointestinal surgery. Often referred to as “Queen of the Blues”, Koko was most well known for her rough and soulful powerhouse vocals.

“Blues is my life,” … “It’s a true feeling that comes from the heart, not just something that comes out of my mouth”

Koko Taylor

mvyradio will commemorate Koko Taylor during The Blues At 8 tomorrow.
