A band that got together in Boston and now resides in Brooklyn, Lake Street Dive paid a visit to their old stomping grounds to play three packed shows at Club Passim in Cambridge this past weekend. I had never seen the band live before, but was determined to check them out after hearing their recent performance on A Prairie Home Companion.
This four piece has a delightful throwback pop sound, with vocalist Rachael Price commanding your attention with her incredibly smooth, jazzy voice and sultry performance style. Every member of the band is clearly dynamite at what they do…and all band members contribute to the songwriting which makes for a nice array of tunes. While Price can certainly handle vocal duties on her own, I thought the occasional three part harmonies really locked things in. You’ll hear what I mean in this live performance of “You Go Down Smooth”:
The band covered tunes like “Faith” from George Michael, Hall & Oates’ “Rich Girl”, and “I Want You Back” from the Jackson 5. Keep an eye out for their new EP of (mostly) cover tunes that’ll come out in May.
