NEW Music: Regina Spektor

Regina

I know I’m a little late to the party on this one (Regina’s new album, Far came out in June). I stupidly dismissed the album after hearing the first single, “Laughing With”. I don’t want to assume I know the message she’s trying to get across with this one…but what I DO know is that the lyrics are really off putting for me:

“No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God when they’re starving or freezing or so very poor
No one laughs at God when the doctor calls after some routine tests
No one’s laughing at God when it’s gotten real late and their kid’s not back from that party yet…

But God can be funny
At a cocktail party while listening to a good God-themed joke or
Or when the crazies say he hates us and they get so red in the head you think that they’re about to choke
God can be funny
When told he’ll give you money if you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie
Who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Clause
God can be so hilarious.”

So I definitely didn’t like the single when it first came out…and it was the only tune I heard from the album. Months later, I decided to check out the rest, and I really enjoyed it. The first track immediately put a smile on my face. “The Calculation” is poppy and fun. Here her lyrics take a really interesting look at a ‘loving’ relationship. “Folding Chair” is another fun and upbeat number that gets me into a happy mood. The sound of Regina’s playful voice and energetic piano-playing definitely has this effect on me a lot of the time. On the other hand, she can definitely get deep and dark when she slows things down…”Human Of The Year” is one of my favorites of the slower tracks, as is “Wallet”, and “Eet”, which has a fun video:

All in all, the whole album is a great listen from start to finish (if “Laughing With” doesn’t put you off). I’m glad I finally gave Far a chance. Better late than never.
