SONG: Dawes

“Fire Away”

Last night on the mvyradio Hot Seat, I focused on contemporary artists and the musicians who have inspired their sound. When it came time to show how the band Dawes has been inspired by Jackson Browne, it seemed fitting to play a song that features Browne on backing vocals. I feel like this track can get lost on the Dawes album, Nothing Is Wrong, but I was reminded of just how good it is when I revisited it. It’s lengthy, but if you can listen until the end, it just keeps getting better and better.

SONG: Gotye

“Hearts A Mess”

Tonight on the Hot Seat I featured some artists that have recently been added into the mix at mvyradio… and I explored some deeper cuts or older songs from those artists. How much Gotye have you heard? I love “Somebody That I Used To Know” just as much as the next guy, but I always think it’s nice to hear more from an artist whose single grabs you. Here’s another great tune from Gotye:

mvyradio HOT SEAT

Last minute, my boss asked me to sit in the HOT SEAT on Monday night, which means I play an hour of whatever I want on mvyradio at 9PM. I really had no idea what I’d do for a theme, but I said yes, and a day or two later I came up with a pretty fun idea.

I’m a huge fan of movies, and especially in the winter I watch them pretty frequently (a movie a day lately). I have a small collection of my favorites that I watch again and again…a BIG part of what makes me love them – the soundtrack ! Good music placed at a particular point in a film is SO memorable. I could probably do a 2 hour show with this theme, but I’ve got to choose! Here are a few I know I’ll include:

MOVIE: The Royal Tenenbaums
SONG: Nico – “These Days”

MOVIE: The Life Aquatic
SONG: David Bowie – “Life On Mars”

MOVIE: Garden State
SONG: The Shins – “New Slang”

Tune in on Monday at 9PM for my HOT SEAT on mvyradio.com

mvyradio HOT SEAT: Life Is Good

Tune in tonight at 9pm, when I host THE HOT SEAT on mvyradio. I’ll play music from the artists performing at next weekend’s Life Is Good festival. I’ve also talked with James MacDonald, who’s the producer of the festival, and he had some wonderful background to share about the company as well as the mission of the Life Is Good playmakers. This is more than just a fun festival with a dynamite lineup…100% of festival proceeds go towards helping children in need. Great music and a great cause. Here’s my playlist for tonight:

mvyradio HOT SEAT

I struggled for probably half a day trying to think of a theme for my Hot Seat tonight, but then I kinda gave up. There’s so much great new music out there, I figured I could just play some that I’ve really been digging lately. Then I thought about my habit of listening to a particular song I love on repeat, and figured I could narrow it down to about 10 or 15 songs that I’ve been playing over and over again. So, “Songs On Repeat”… that’s what I’ll do tonight for the Hot Seat, and here’s my playlist:

“Dazzling Blue” Paul Simon
“Rumor Has It” Adele
“World News” Local Natives
“The King Knows How” Over the Rhine
“Doc Pomus” Ben Folds/Nick Hornby
“Helplessness Blues” Fleet Foxes
“They’re In Love, Where Am I?” The Weepies
“Little River” The Tallest Man On Earth
“Barton Hollow” The Civil Wars
“White Table” Delta Spirit
“Colors” April Smith and the Great Picture Show
“Dog Days Are Over” Florence and the Machine
“Second Chance” Peter Bjorn & John
“The Chain” Ingrid Michaelson

I’m very happy with how this came together! Hope you can check it out tonight at 9pm…

mvyradio HOT SEAT

The more I thought about my idea for the Hot Seat tonight and the more I looked through my music to find songs, the more confused I got. But thankfully, I work best when I just sit down with all of my options and go for it! I pieced together my show today and I think the music explains the mood and theme I’m going for much better than I can. Wintertime melancholy is the rough idea, but listen tonight at 9 and you’ll feel it. Here’s my set list:

The Decemberists - “The Crane Wife 1″
Band Of Horses – “Evening Kitchen”
Ray LaMontagne – “Sarah”
The Weepies – “Stars”
Death Cab for Cutie – “Passenger Seat”
Radiohead – “Let Down”
Ingrid Michaelson – “The Chain”
Jose Gonzalez – “The Nest”
Kings Of Convenience – “24-25″
Julian Velard – “A Dream”
Iron & Wine – “Naked As We Came”
Death Cab For Cutie – “A Lack Of Color”
The Weepies - “World Spins Madly On”
Matt Pond PA – “Not So Bad At All”
Nick Drake – “Pink Moon”

Song Of The Day

Death Cab for Cutie – “Transatlanticism”

I’m gearing up to take the mvyradio Hot Seat on Monday night. I’ve decided to give in to my winter blues. I tend to get a little down during the wintertime and especially this month, I’ve been in a bit of a funk. I know I’m not alone, and I’ve decided to embrace this feeling and turn it into an hour of comforting music.

“Sometimes when one is sad, it consoles one to hear a sad song”
-Thomas Hardy

I’ll be playing songs that epitomize feelings like loneliness, sadness, and bleakness… songs that give off the feeling of the cold, gray, damp New England winter. Right away I know that the Death Cab for Cutie album, Transatlanticism will be included in this Hot Seat. In my opinion, this is the ultimate winter album. I may not play the over 7 minute title track, but here it is to give you the full effect.

Tune into The Hot Seat on mvyradio tomorrow night… I’ll be hosting the show and playing an hour of my favorite tunes that I featured on this blog in 2010. It’s a bit early, but it’ll be like a year in review. Before I starting putting together this show, I felt bummed about the lack of really great music this year… but now I’m remembering a lot of awesome releases and I want to share them with you! Here’s my playlist:

Local Natives – “World News”
Frightened Rabbit – “Swim Until You Can’t See Land”
Jesca Hoop – “The Kingdom”
Band Of Horses – “Factory”
Josh Ritter – “The Curse”
The Black Keys – “Everlasting Light”
Vampire Weekend – “White Sky”
The New Pornographers – “Sweet Talk, Sweet Talk”
OK Go – “White Knuckles”
Dawes – “When My Time Comes”

It seems to me that collaborations and cover songs have really caught on in the past year or so… it’s almost a craze. That’s why I decided to explore that craze in my Hot Seat on Monday night. There has been no shortage of great cover songs as of late… I’ve chosen to play a few that I’ve really been digging and I’ll be sure to remind you what the original sounded like. For collaborations, I could’ve easily filled 3 hours, but again, I chose some of my recent favorites. Tune in Monday night at 9PM to hear me explore the current craze of collaborations and covers!

Robert Plant – “Angel Dance” [Los Lobos]
Patty Larkin w/ Jonatha Brooke – “Only One”

Marc Cohn – “Only Living Boy in New York” [Simon & Garfunkel]
