“Love Vigilantes”

Have you ever had a moment where you realize what’s truly, deeply important to you in life? In that moment, your day to day concerns might seem to fall away. It can be a moment of joy or of sadness, but it’s eye-opening no matter the emotion. I had a moment like that today…and shortly afterwards, I connected with this song and it’s beautiful yet painful lyrics:

“Oh I’ve just come
From the land of the sun
From a war that must be won
In the name of truth
With our soldiers so brave
your freedom we will save
With our rifles and grenades
And some help from God
I want to see my family
My wife and child waiting for me
I’ve got to go home
I’ve been so alone, you see

You just can’t believe
The joy I did receive
When I finally got my leave
And I was going home
Oh I flew through the sky
my convictions could not lie
For my country I would die
And I will see it soon
I want to see my family
My wife and child waiting for me
I’ve got to go home
I’ve been so alone, you see

When I walked through the door
My wife she lay upon the floor
And with tears her eyes were sore
I did not know why
Then I looked into her hand
And I saw the telegram
That said that I was a brave, brave man
But that I was dead
I want to see my family
My wife and child waiting for me
I’ve got to go home
I’ve been so alone, you see”

LYRICS: John Hiatt

“Blues Can’t Even Find Me”

I love this tune from John Hiatt’s latest album and the more I listen to the words, the more I appreciate what he’s saying. There’s this technology theme that runs throughout the song, a commentary on how it has affected us, or maybe just how it has affected him. I think it’s something that’s really important to acknowledge and think about (as I type this blog post ;)

“World is closin’ in on me
Don’t know what to do
Can’t see the big picture anymore
If there’s even one to view

Wife keeps pushin’ buttons
Spend all day starin’ at a little screen

I’m feelin’ invisible
The blues can’t even find me…

She cried all the way to Memphis
With the kids in back
And only me to talk it out with
Used to be like that

Now there’s fifty people in the car
And the kids are grown
And I’ve heard her side fifty times
Talkin’ on her cell phone

Now we’re just so lonely
And there’s no turnin’ back
It’s virtually impossible
But I can live with that”

LYRICS: You Won’t

“Who Knew”

You Won’t is Josh Arnoudse and Raky Sastri, a Boston-based duo who’s twisted sense of humor can be thoroughly entertaining and hilarious. I’ve seen these two perform live and I’m impressed by the sound they produce, not to mention their thoughtfully worded lyrics. They really nail the words with this tune and the music video is super creative and kooky.

“If I was a cute little kid
I would show you the painting I did
for you
But I’m up in the air
I’m not here and not there

If I was a sad-eyed 18
I would cut all the holes in your jeans
for you
But now what can I say?
I’m too little too late.”

LYRICS: Chris Smither

“Hundred Dollar Valentine”

This is the title track of Chris Smither’s latest album and it’s probably one of the most well-written songs I’ve heard this year. From start to finish, every phrase seems so perfect to me. I’ve got to include the entire song:

“Tell me why, the moment you’re gone
I can’t see anymore,
That sun is risin’ but it just don’t shine,
Ain’t no light through my door.
I flip my switches but I don’t turn on,
There ain’t a flicker baby, I got no juice today,
I had a lighter in my carry-on,
But the airline took it away.

You know it ain’t just my sight that you stole,
My heart’s been missin’ a beat,
My wheels are spinnin’ but they just don’t roll,
I’m standin’ dead on my feet.
I can’t go out, I can’t stay home,
I’m cryin’ showers, my mind’s a hurricane,
I called a taxi ’bout an hour ago,
But I think he got lost in the rain.

No mail today, my phone never rings,
Nothin’ works when you’re gone,
My mind is hummin’ but my heart don’t sing,
Baby can’t you please come home.
I got time on my hands I got you on my mind,
I got a heart that’s beatin’ like a hundred-dollar valentine,
I know you told me you’d be home by four,
But I just can’t take it no more.
I know you told me you’d be home by four,
But I just can’t take it no more.”

“I’m Getting Ready”

This song has always given me goosebumps – nearly moved me to tears – no matter how many times I listen. And the more I hear each word, the clearer I see why it moves me the way it does.

“Oh my…I didn’t know what it means to believe
Oh my…I didn’t know what it means to believe
But if I hold on tight is it true?
Would you take care of all that I do?
Oh Lord,
Imma gettin’ ready
To Believe

Oh my…I didn’t know how hard it would be
Oh my…I didn’t know how hard it would be
But if I hold on tight is it true?
Would you take care of all that I do?
Oh Lord,
Imma gettin’ ready
To Believe.

“Undiscovered First”

Lately I’ve been revisiting Feist’s album, The Reminder…a collection of songs that really move me. If you haven’t listened to this album, I’d urge you to check it out. The words from this particular track keep running over and over in my head today…

“I had what I thought
were clear open eyes
bright blue
vision not of a light
carrying pictures to lay on you
close up eyes let them in
to a  mind opening
it’s the edge of love
You can’t unthink a thought
either it’s there or not

shadows of the mountain
don’t tell of what’s on earth
the breadth and the height
of an undiscovered first”

LYRICS: Delta Spirit

“Salt in the Wound”

My Delta Spirit obsession has gotten out of hand this summer. I actually forced myself to take the CDs out of my car and listen to something else yesterday…yet today I still find myself thinking about their songs…and the beautiful words to this particular tune:

“now with my heart wide open
I listen to the wind just for a word
sure I know it’s futile
but that’s all I have in this world
to look
down from the hill
and howl
at the moon
all the tears I cried never salted any wound
well the earth
is so tender and cruel
if you’re not there it’s still so beautiful”

“The Whole Enchilada”

To be honest, I wrote this song off when I first heard it because I thought it was a bit cheesy. The use of the phrase “the whole enchilada” and the way the chorus repeats and rhymes just really didn’t hold my interest. Today, for some reason, I really heard the lyrics and appreciated the tune in a completely different way.

“You’ve been wishing all of your life
For a woman that’ll love you
Tell the truth and treat you right
And you’ve been alone crying yourself to sleep
Now you got a girl who can rock your world
Put a smile on your face and a love you’re gonna keep
This is the beginning are you ready to learn
To love somebody for a lifetime
Wake up it’s your turn.

So tell me now that you got a whole enchilada
Now that you gotta,
What you’re gonna do, what you gonna do
Are you gonna be any better
Than the man you had to be to get her
Oh now that you gotta
What you gonna do, what you gonna do, what you gonna do.”

LYRICS: Al Green

“I Can’t Get Next To You”

Occasionally a song will completely take hold of me and I literally listen to it again and again and again and…again. Does that happen to you too? That’s what happened with this song while I was checking out Al Green’s Greatest Hits album. There’s so much sexiness (of course), soul and emotion in the music and in these words:

“I…my my my my
Ohhh I…can turn a grey sky blue
I…You see I can make it rain when I want to
Oh I…can build a castle from a single grain of sand
I…You see I can make a ship sail on dry land

Unhappy am I with all the powers that I possess
cause girl you’re the key to my happiness
and I can’t get next to you babe
can’t get next to you
I’ve been tryin a long time
can’t get next to you
I don’t know what to do…”

LYRICS: Norah Jones

“Good Morning”

Breaking up. Norah Jones explores all the anger, sadness and introspection that comes along with this painful experience on her new album Little Broken Hearts. I immediately loved the SOUND of this album (produced by Danger Mouse) but with closer attention paid to the lyrics, I’m bowled over by the emotional content on these 12 tracks. “Good Morning” is the perfect way to begin the story:

“Good Morning
My thoughts on leaving are back on the table I thought you should know
And maybe powerful actions, or powerful feelings would keep me from
going

I’m folding my hand
I’m folding my hand”

Norah Jones
