LYRICS: You Won’t

“Who Knew”

You Won’t is Josh Arnoudse and Raky Sastri, a Boston-based duo who’s twisted sense of humor can be thoroughly entertaining and hilarious. I’ve seen these two perform live and I’m impressed by the sound they produce, not to mention their thoughtfully worded lyrics. They really nail the words with this tune and the music video is super creative and kooky.

“If I was a cute little kid
I would show you the painting I did
for you
But I’m up in the air
I’m not here and not there

If I was a sad-eyed 18
I would cut all the holes in your jeans
for you
But now what can I say?
I’m too little too late.”

LYRICS: Delta Spirit

“Yamaha”

This track is hiding at the very end of Delta Spirit’s latest self-titled album. It’s honestly been making me cry lately…with it’s gorgeous, lush sound and words that I think really make you FEEL the emotion. Tomorrow night I’ll see Delta Spirit LIVE with Dr. Dog at Lupo’s…

“So cold I know you can’t believe it
Sometimes you gotta face the feeling
When you don’t care if you get up again
There’s a thousand things I will not understand
How you’re dealing with the hell I put you through
If I had my way I’d be right there next to you
There’s certain things in life you cannot change
There’s certain things…
I hope you know I care.”

“I’m Getting Ready”

This song has always given me goosebumps – nearly moved me to tears – no matter how many times I listen. And the more I hear each word, the clearer I see why it moves me the way it does.

“Oh my…I didn’t know what it means to believe
Oh my…I didn’t know what it means to believe
But if I hold on tight is it true?
Would you take care of all that I do?
Oh Lord,
Imma gettin’ ready
To Believe

Oh my…I didn’t know how hard it would be
Oh my…I didn’t know how hard it would be
But if I hold on tight is it true?
Would you take care of all that I do?
Oh Lord,
Imma gettin’ ready
To Believe.

LYRICS: Delta Spirit

“Salt in the Wound”

My Delta Spirit obsession has gotten out of hand this summer. I actually forced myself to take the CDs out of my car and listen to something else yesterday…yet today I still find myself thinking about their songs…and the beautiful words to this particular tune:

“now with my heart wide open
I listen to the wind just for a word
sure I know it’s futile
but that’s all I have in this world
to look
down from the hill
and howl
at the moon
all the tears I cried never salted any wound
well the earth
is so tender and cruel
if you’re not there it’s still so beautiful”

LYRICS: Keb Mo

“The Whole Enchilada”

To be honest, I wrote this song off when I first heard it because I thought it was a bit cheesy. The use of the phrase “the whole enchilada” and the way the chorus repeats and rhymes just really didn’t hold my interest. Today, for some reason, I really heard the lyrics and appreciated the tune in a completely different way.

“You’ve been wishing all of your life
For a woman that’ll love you
Tell the truth and treat you right
And you’ve been alone crying yourself to sleep
Now you got a girl who can rock your world
Put a smile on your face and a love you’re gonna keep
This is the beginning are you ready to learn
To love somebody for a lifetime
Wake up it’s your turn.

So tell me now that you got a whole enchilada
Now that you gotta,
What you’re gonna do, what you gonna do
Are you gonna be any better
Than the man you had to be to get her
Oh now that you gotta
What you gonna do, what you gonna do, what you gonna do.”

LYRICS: Al Green

“I Can’t Get Next To You”

Occasionally a song will completely take hold of me and I literally listen to it again and again and again and…again. Does that happen to you too? That’s what happened with this song while I was checking out Al Green’s Greatest Hits album. There’s so much sexiness (of course), soul and emotion in the music and in these words:

“I…my my my my
Ohhh I…can turn a grey sky blue
I…You see I can make it rain when I want to
Oh I…can build a castle from a single grain of sand
I…You see I can make a ship sail on dry land

Unhappy am I with all the powers that I possess
cause girl you’re the key to my happiness
and I can’t get next to you babe
can’t get next to you
I’ve been tryin a long time
can’t get next to you
I don’t know what to do…”

LYRICS: Norah Jones

“Good Morning”

Breaking up. Norah Jones explores all the anger, sadness and introspection that comes along with this painful experience on her new album Little Broken Hearts. I immediately loved the SOUND of this album (produced by Danger Mouse) but with closer attention paid to the lyrics, I’m bowled over by the emotional content on these 12 tracks. “Good Morning” is the perfect way to begin the story:

“Good Morning
My thoughts on leaving are back on the table I thought you should know
And maybe powerful actions, or powerful feelings would keep me from
going

I’m folding my hand
I’m folding my hand”

LYRICS: Dave Matthews Band

“Two Step”

It’s that time of year when I start listening to a lot more Dave Matthews Band, Jack Johnson, Bob Marley, 311, etc…all that chill, summer music that melts you into your seat (or into your beach towel). While listening to this song the other day, the lyrics really jumped out at me:

“Celebrate we will
because life is short but sweet, for certain
we’re climbing two by two
to be sure these days continue
things we cannot change”

LYRICS: The Tallest Man On Earth

“1904″

This new tune from The Tallest Man On Earth is available for FREE download HERE, and I’m really digging it.  Kristian Matsson’s new album, There’s No Leaving Now comes out June 12th and I’m so excited for this one. All of Matsson’s lyrics really move me in this track, but the end seems to strike me the most:

“…when the leaving is hard but you go now
and you feel what you drag ‘cross the floor
because something with these trails are just different
since they shook the earth in 1904

…and some will say it’s not even healthy
but body is young and mind is sure
that something is so right when(?) you’re thinking
cause they shook the earth in 1904″

LYRICS: Bahamas

“Lost In The Light”

Another Bahamas post, but a much needed suggestion to you…this song has been on repeat in my car and it was wonderful in the background while driving on this rainy day. The beautiful background vocals and percussive rhythm carry the verses and  lead them to a climactic transition with a heavy piano chorus. All this while his vocals start to remind me of Amos Lee! And the LYRICS…those are really what get me:

“…And I held my own
still I rattled your bones
I said some awful things and I take them back

If we would try again
just remember when
before we were lovers,
I swear we were friends

So if someone could see me now,
let them see you.

Let them see you
See you through
all the hard things
we’ve all gotta do
cause this life is long
and so you wouldn’t be wrong
being free
leavin me
on my own
