My friend J recommended Laura Marling to me a few weeks ago, and I’ve loved everything I’ve heard so far. I found this song in particular very moving…and the video really pulled me in. It’s hard to believe this English singer/songwriter is just 21 years old. Her words are so clever and prolific. Definitely check out more if you dig this tune…
When I heard about Amy Winehouse’s death, this was the first tune I thought of. I know her catalogue is filled with amazing songs, and this might seem like an odd favorite, but this song came out at a time in my life when I grabbed hold of it tightly. I remember listening over and over and over. It’s so FUN; it really lifts the spirits. I was somewhat saddened by Winehouse’s death, and for some reason, I haven’t listened to her music since then. Then the other night, “Valerie” came on at the bar and I had a moment…and I’ve been thinking about it ever since.
I didn’t know this song was on the Forgetting Sarah Marshall soundtrack (love that movie!), but we’ve been playing it on mvy lately and I absolutely love it! It’s got a Nick Drake feel to it for sure. So beautiful…
Wow. Wow, wow, wow. I’m SO excited for the new St. Vincent album, Strange Mercy, coming out September 12th. I had heard one other tune (“Surgeon”), which I liked, but I LOVE this newly released single and the video is absolutely awesome! It’s so creepy and brilliant…it had my full attention from start to finish. Annie Clark is stunning – her appearance AND her sound. She continues to make some of the most original music I’ve ever heard. Check it out:
Today when I woke up, I put on some Mirah and let the beautiful day shine through my sliding door. It brought me back to a summer I spent living and working on the Cape with my sister. I definitely listened to Mirah tunes over and over and over that summer. I was at an age when I felt like she was speaking directly to me and without the music I might have perished. Listening to those songs today brought back some beautiful memories, and also made me feel so happy with where I am now and how far I’ve come since that time.
“Let’s none of us forget about who we are So choose a path and follow it Take a pill and swallow it None of us forget about who we are It’s not forever we can fool around in the dark
If we sleep together would it make it any better If we sleep together would you be my friend forever?”
Man O man, the album Revelator is amazing. I can’t get enough. We recently started playing this tune on mvy, and it just sounds SO GOOD in the mix. Don’t miss this band live if you ever get the chance…it’s just sizzling. Check it out:
There’s nothing like a peaceful, gorgeous piece of music and an equally stunning music video to ease your mind on a hectic August day. I really needed this 5 minutes and 45 seconds of calm today. Thanks, Bon Iver.
Well, I’m still fighting the good fight against this sickness. I spent the weekend in bed mostly…and I feel very removed from “reality”. Today I saw that Feist had released a new single from her forthcoming album, Metals (October 4th), and I was psyched to listen. No surprise – it sounds great, and this album (along with Wilco’s) is what I’m most excited for in terms of fall releases.
Well, summer sickness has its hold on me…I’ve been fighting it all week. Despite feeling under the weather, I made it to see some of The Wood Brothers’ show at Nectars MV last night, and I’m so glad I did! These guys are great live…they’ve got awesome energy and ridiculous talent on their respective instruments. This song, the single from their new album, is a great example of that amazing musicianship. The bassline! The slide guitar! And how about this trippy video? So fun…
