On Saturday night, I decided last minute to check out the John Cruz show at the Katherine Cornell Theatre here on the Vineyard. I hadn’t heard him live, but I had heard a lot of his new album “One Of These Days”.
John is a singer/songwriter from Hawaii, and his music has the laid-back island feel written all over it. Almost every one of his songs leaves you feeling happy.
The show was awesome. John had a lead guitarist, percussionist, and bassist playing with him, making for a full, yet still raw sound.
I was hoping to hear my absolute favorite song off his new album, “Missing You”. Low and behold he played the tune early in the second set…
“Lying all alone late at night in my bed
was all full of feelings, had pictures of you in my head
I was thinking about the spring time, you and me on the beach
my heart was open I held out my hand but you didnt even reach
All dressed up no where to go, go to the movies but the theater is so cold
sit there be myself sippin’ on my coke, movie stars are making love
and my heart is broken said
I….. been missing you
I….. been missing you”
You can listen to the album version of this BEAUTIFUL song on John’s MySpace page. This is one of those songs that totally moves me. I almost cry every time I hear it.
John Cruz is definitely worth checking out live, especially if you can catch him at an intimate venue like the Katherine Cornell.
John brought up Martha’s Vineyard native Joe Keenan at the start of the second set, and I was delighted by the few tunes they played together. I will have more on Joe soon…
